      Smokes really bad on cold start up then goes away once warmed up. Advice please??? Would a engine oil additive help soften the steam seals?? Which do you recomend? Thanks in advance guys

Thanks in advance guys[/quote]the smoke in the morning is more than likely condisation . what color is the smoke ? does it last for seconds or minuts ? as for the engine oil additive help soften the steam seals . i would hafto say no that stuff rarely works .best thing to do is go thourgh the seals and replace them .

          yes blue smoke. last for 5 mins or so depends on how cold it is. What does a seal job usaully cost?

            If you pull the head and bring it to the machine
            shop.Then reinstall it yourself it won’t be to bad.
            If you send it to the mechanic the price goes up.
            how many miles on the motor? as for the oil additive.
            don’t waste your money. do a compression test and leak
            leak down test.

              a seal jobe depends on where you live and if your doing it or a shop + shop rates .
              as for the blue smoke in turn, means your engine has worn valve guides, piston rings An engine that burns a lot of oil (more than a quart in 500 miles) is an engine that needs to be overhauled. Normal oil consumption should be a quart or less in 1500 miles. Most newer engines consume less than half a quart of oil between oil changes (every 3000 miles). So if your engine is burning oil, it’s essentially worn out and needs to be repaired or replaced .

                300,000km. car runs great just doesn’t like the cold mornings!! Arg! Is there no cheap/temporary thing I can try? I’ve been told its the stem vavles? Can we say thats the problem?

                  depending on the temperature outside when you start the car it will blow smoke
                  the same thing applies when you exhale deeply during a cold winter day
                  you can see your breath…

                  Id bet it doesnt do it on warm days does it? My car does the same thing when its cold here, like in winter time

                        It does sound like a valve stem seal issue however I don’t think anything you put into the oil will help the problem. To be honest if the valve seals are that bad it’s likely the rest of the engine is in poor shape as well. You can however replace valve seals while the cylinder head is installed, you just need to put the piston for the cylinder you’re working on at TDC and fill it with compressed air while you remove the valve springs. The compressed air will help keep the valves from dropping into the cylinder while you replace the seals. This does require a special valve spring compression tool however. One last thing is that replacing the valve seals may not be enough, if the valves or the valve guides are worn excessively then it’s possible the new seals will not solve the problem.
