I took my Honda in to the dealer today because I had a power loss while driving turning a corner. I slowed down and as I was turning I lost power and my power steering quit for an instant before I felt the engine engage again and power steering return. The dealer could not replicate this problem. It has happened to me on three ocassions. It scared me, I could not turn the wheel, I was turning and bam the power loss in the steering and I think the juice( electrical) it happened so fast, then came back on just as quick. They the ( dealer) could not find what was wrong. It’s dangerous to drive not knowing if it will happen again. Otherwise the SUV runs fine. They said the battery was not up to par, but that would not make me lose the go power and power steering. It happened so quick I did not notice any lights go on or rpm meter needle go down. Any one have the same thing happen?
Yes I have read about other CRVs that have had this same problem as well as numerous other vehicles including some other Honda models.
The dealer should have done a full diagnosis for you to see what if any fault codes have been thrown up in order to get a lead on the cause. Presumably there were no fault codes thrown up. They also no doubt checked out all the obvious areas and could not locate a fault.
Normally with this problem as you described I would suspect a fault in the ignition system because from your description the electrical power is cut , hence the engine will immediately stop and then fires back up when the current connects again or you need to manually restart it. It is up to you but given the age and use the car has had since 2002 I would strongly suspect the keyed ignition switch unit is faulty and needs to be replaced. If it were my car experiencing this random fault this is what I would be doing as a first step. These units often do not last forever (even in Hondas) and will inevitably need to be replaced at some stage in some older vehicles.
(Furthermore, whilst I would not expect the weak battery the dealer has mentioned to you is in any way related to the problem you experienced, replace it with a new one in any event rather than doing the usual wait till it dies maintenance system, or the wait till it plays havoc with your electrical systems, many owners seem to go by.)
