Computer memory savers seem like nothing more than a simple 9V connected to a cigarette lighter plug or battery cables.

I’d like to just make one using a 9-12V wall adapter with clips to connect to battery cables (which I prefer over the cigarette lighter plug style because some cars don’t leave the plug on when the key is off)…would there be anything wrong with that set-up?

One other thing seems like I should also use a diode so that when the saver is first connected the car battery voltage will not run back into the 9V-12V wall adapter

And I was thinking of uses a wall adapter that is capable of putting out several amps so if I open a car door or something it won’t fry the adapter

I see what you’re getting at, but what would be the point of clipping it onto the battery cables? The idea is to save the memory when you remove the battery.

You also don’t need several amps of current. If you’re trying to run anything more than incidental lights (ie door) just hook the battery back up.

The point of being able to clip it to the batter cables is because some vehicles do not have cigarette lighter sockets that are live when the key is off so you would need to attach to the cables.

Also, it’s true that several amps is not necessary, but it is just a precaution to keep your electronics from getting fried if you accidentally open the car door or something.

I actually did end up making one that is pretty sweet. It runs off of a wall socket or battery, attaches to the cables or lighter socket, and has leds to show you have a live socket/good connection and to show that you have a good 9V supply attached.
