Its an automatic? does it start in neutral? Are you switching between park and reverse, park and drive, or park and neutral? Is your vehicle going all the way into park? Id start by making sure your car is going into park all the way by checking the linkage.

there must be a park switch or a neutral safety switch.you will need to remove a console to find it. C8-)

This exact same thing happened to my 87 Corolla. At that time, I didn’t know any thing about cars. The mechanic mess with the safety switch. Worked for a week and the same thing happens again. Then a friend of my uncle came over one day and he was a toyota expert. He looked at it, he checked the oil level, totally low. Then he rebuilt the starter and it never happens again and the car is sold now.
I don’t know if this helps but the symptoms are the same as my car.

I think you’re on the right path looking into the PRNDL switch, it may be out of adjustment. I don’t know the procedure for that exact vehicle but I’m sure you could find it in the service manual.

If its put together like any other car the center console cover should pop off with some wiggling. If there are cup holders or any other things that can freely come out do those, then check the rest of the cover to make sure there arent any screws. Like I said it should just pop off. Normally the neutral safety switch is right there with the shifter so it activates the switch when its in park. When trying to start in neutral what your car is doing is reading what gear the trans is in since the switch is off, that way itll start in neutral.

Try removing the switch (should be straight forward simple) and making sure its in park press on the switch to see if its activating and try to start it. The neutral safety switch should be fairly cheap to replace if it ends up being the issue.

                  Good luck and Happy wrenching

+1 Sounds like a PRNDL switch problem.
