I have a 2002 cavalier 2.2 ohv my problem is first the air conditioning don’t work and when I turn on the defrost or the heat this last winter the rpms would go up and down without pushing on the gas pedal I took it to a local shop he said a code came up for the high pressure switch he wanted to charge me like $200 to replace I said I will try to fix it on my own money problems kept me from fixing it so now after all this time looking into it again I just had autozone check for codes it passed no codes at all do you think the rpms was going up because the system had no freon kicking the compressor off and on or maybe I have a leak I don’t know where the high pressure switch is but I think it might be this part that is attached to the high side with wires going to the compressor I will post a pic of what I’m talking about if I can

your rpms are fluctuating because your compressor is NOT kicking on. I’m guessing you paid for a diagnosis and the tech found that your high side pressure switch was faulty. This is more than likely what’s causing your a/c not to work. just follow your a/c lines and you’ll run into a “sensor” looking thing poking out of the line with I think 3 wires coming out of it. Once you find it, double check that it’s on the high side line (the line with the larger quick connect fitting). Be careful not to twist or bend the line so much that you could break it or cause problems while you’re removing the switch. Once you replace the switch then take your car back to the mechanic so that he can do an evac and recharge.
