When reversing, there is a high pitch sound from our 2009 mazda 2 which is a automatic. Sorta sounds like metal screeching. Its something Ive only noticed today, but it could have always been there as there are no other bad symptoms whilst reversing.

The parking brake is completely off and my foot isnt on the brake pedal when the sound is noticeable. I dont even have to apply the throttle, if the car is reversing without me applying the throttle the sound is apparent. When the car is in R and not moving with my foot on the brake, there is no sound. I think it may be from the rear but Im not sure.

Ive checked the ATF and its at normal levels and pink. The car has done about 60,000km (~38000 miles). The car was in an accident early in its life and Im pretty sure they replaced the radiator – so I would assume they had to top up with new ATF when the put the new on in – unsure what brand.

      any ideas?

It’s probably normal. My neighbor has a Tacoma and when he backs up, it’s loud enough for me to hear if I’m anywhere outside my house and his driveway is at least 100 yards away. And it’s done that since he got it. Usually high pitched transmission sounds while driving forward indicate problems.

Probably worn break pads. There is a metal clip that will rub against the rotor when you are driving in reverse. Hope that helps.

            hey guys, just an update

i jacked up each wheel and rotated them by hand to see if i could isolate the problem: it was front left

took off the wheel, caliper and brakes – all ok. i have about 3mm until i hit the indicator on the brakes. took off the caliper holder and disc and there is something stuck there – it looked like bark or like gummed up duct tape – dunno but it was soft so i wasnt convinced. i rotated the bit thats left (wheel bearing?) and thought i could still hear it but didnt go any further and decided to put it all back together and just did a quick up and down of the drive way and it seems to have gone.
            ___

            something new though:

whilst i was rotating the rear right there was a pssh sound, like gas release or sucked in – it was only at a certain part of the rotation for a split second. it wasnt noticable on the rear left. its not something noticeable when driving. there is no ‘play’ in the wheel as in top and bottom or left and right looseness. any ideas?

It is possible the debris caused the noise, I would monitor it from here. As for the sound in the rear it was probably normal. What you describe sounds like what you would normally here when the brake pads will contact the rotor during rotation. Keep us posted if things change.
