I just found this bit actually, didn’t mean to offend.
Hi, I’m Krys from Frankfurt, Germany, nice meeting y’all.
I’ve been a car geek for about 15 years now, no education, but plenty of friends in the automotive sector, so yeah 😉 learning by doing I’d say.
In my real life profession, I’m a sound engineer (with engineering school and all) and sound designer, which is less exciting than one would think.
I always spent my last penny on parts and my last minute hanging out at the shops of my friends back where I grew up. In 2005, I got myself a beat up MA70 Supra GTE, which we tore down and rebuilt completely (except for the body I must say). Very lovely job. Took 2 years on the side, but I was told I learned more than the average German technician does during training.
The prejudice in Germany is that young technicians are prone to do what their OBD2 tester tells them to and little else. It’s become even more of a “throw parts at it” business than in the States, where I spent quite some time from 2001 to 2005. So I try to learn as much as possible from people like Eric or my (rather aged) master tech friends and just pick up the tools of the trade – for fun rather than money – as I go.
Since March, I did a few repairs on several cars of people around me, which included:
– Full Service (plugs, all oils, several gaskets, belts, pulleys, axle grease etc.) on a 1989 Isuzu Trooper 2.6, a 1988 Nissan Pathfinder 2.4, a 1990 Nissan Pathfinder 3.0, a 1990 Merc W124 station wagon 2.3l, a 2003 Lexus LS430, a 1997 Mitsubishi 1.8 Space Runner, and a 1983 Jeep CJ5 258.
– EGR system removal for the 1983 Jeep. They don’t like the whole emissions thing, and since in Germany, 30 year old cars can get a historic tag and thereby omit emissions testing, we just basically removed the whole thing
– Carburetor adjustment on the Jeep
– ECU reset and throttle body clean up in that space runner
– Fixed a leak on the Lexus A/T housing when it started leaking
– Replaced a front parking sensor on the Lexus
– Compression tested the Nissan Pathfinder to find cylinder 5 below 50% compression
– Fixed a automatic HID height adjustment error on a 2003 Lexus IS300
– Fixed a Oxygen sensor heater circuit error on the same IS300
– Resealed the rear lights of a 1996 impreza 2.0 after water build up in the trunk
– Various diagnostics and other minor things on whatever beater drove by more or less 😉My deepest thanks to Eric for so many hours of informative material. I will make sure to heed all the great advice as I did before.
Cheers
