I owned an American car until I bought Japanese Car. I have owned my Nissan Altima since it was new. Now I am learning how to work on them. I under basic car mechanical theory, but of course they are a little different. Also, my model a 1999, some were built in Canada. And that presented some different set of problems with parts, but I am beginning to get the hang of fixing the car.
The problem that gave me a hard time was when I have to replace the rear shoes. I have the mechanics repair manual the the mechanics use at the dealer. In the manual it says that the rear shoe thickness has to be 4.3mm, but when I purchase the rear brake shoes, they are to thick. I end having trouble getting the drums on. Then returning the shoes to purchasing them from another parts line. and yes, I made sure the emergency brakes were off and the regulators were all the way in. Finally, have the shoe shaved down to right thickness to get the drums on. I have my on Roll away tool box, but have had to buy some specialty tools for Nissan Altima 1999.
