      Hello Eric,
Nice to Get to talk to you finally, I think I Got a good one for you.

What kind of opinions have changed for you over the years. Since we are always learning/Growing in our art as things are always evolving and technology grows.

Just as an example: You said that you have seen more problems with rear disk brakes than with drums.(I agree) And basically that the only good “Performance” upgrade you can think of of the top of your head was steel braided brake lines. But then some time later you said that you would like to put a rear disk setup on your ford. I really do already know the answer for this, But I feel It might just open the door for a good little discussion.

One you have not yet touched on Sway bars…..

I do understand the many reasons why I don’t see you touch on “Upgrade” Topics to much. But I Just thought I would open the door for what could be a good ETCG1 video. Not so much on upgrades but I know How most of us start off Building our fun cars and then we end up learning from them. In ways we over looked. May it be how there is a give and take on benefits Or reliability that we didn’t care about at first. But then down the road It drove us nuts. Or maybe how we start off wanting to stay far away from something and then end up really liking it a little later on.

But Eric, I hope you can kinda get where I’m going with this. Take it and run where you want with it.

      ~Jesse

Thanks for the suggestion. In the not too distant future I’m going to make a video about my plans for the Fairmont. I hope to start work on it next spring. During those videos I hope to speak to performance upgrades and why you would do certain ones and not others. At least according to my tastes, it is my build after all. That said, your question really depends on context. I’m building a performance vehicle that will have over 300hp. I’m also going to be changing the rear end anyway and that’s an ideal time to upgrade the brakes. A Civic with 120hp would not benefit from rear disc brakes in the same way, other than the owner would be happy with the accomplishment. Would it stop any better, probably not, but it can be a cool upgrade.

I suppose at the end of the day, it’s a matter of personal taste and your budget.

        Thanks for the suggestion.

Oh as do I agree with you. But I was just getting the ball rolling on this topic. Even if it did not come out of my mind and to the keyboard the right way.

I know that we all have done at bare minimal one thing that we thought were improving something but in the end learned that either it was being canceled out, doing more bad than good, or having an adverse affect on another part of function. like these for instance.

          over tightening something.

Blocking out or cutting off resonators in the intake.

Going to free flowing with an exhaust.

making an engine run to cold.

using to cold of a spark plug.

using big expensive spark plug wires.

Buying spark plugs with multiple ground prong thing that it is amplifying the spark.

Or how some Mazda RX8 guys/gals have gone out and bought a less restrictive aftermarket intake for their 13B’s thinking its improving their cars airflow, But in the end its killing the low and mid range power horribly and only adding just a few hp way way up high in the Rpm’s(and I mean only a FEW too), All Because the one that all those engineers took loads and loads of time & thought to build turned out to be better. who would have ever thought…..DAMN THEM ENGINEERS!!! 😆

Am I making any sense yet? I always thought the best mistakes to learn from are other peoples.

So what kind of a learning curve did you go though? what can you remember that you did you used to do thinking that you were helping when you had later learned that was not the case?

P.S. ♪ ♫”You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel.”♪ ♫ i thought that was pretty funny.

The truth is that I never really had the cash to get a ‘project car’ off the ground. I’ve seen plenty of other peoples vehicles screwed up by their attempts at performance though. That said, it is a good topic and one I hope to explore with the Fairmont series next year.

            Thanks again for your suggestion.

            Hello Eric,
I’ve been working on bicycles since the age of 16 and lately I’m getting more and more into motorcycles and cars.I enjoy your website and youtube account very much and it has learned me alot. I hope to become more skilled at engine repairs.
In the last few years I have gotten quite good at repairing old bicycles. It has gotten up to the point that I can simply hear a problem and diagnose it without even looking at the bike. This had become a problem for me. I can’t shut my technical brain off. So wherever I go, whenever, I hear faulty brakes, low tire pressure, lack of lubricant on all bicycles and it is very much annoying. It has happened many times that I stop people in front of my house and tell them they have a serious problem on their bicycle. No one cares offcourse. I secretly pump up the tires of my roommates bicycle and I suggest to do servicing regularly for almost no money. I have given up the hope that people take care of their vehicules and I simply suggest to do it for them for a very good price. Sometimes I do it secretly just to get my mind of it.
I can’t stand to see -or hear- vehicules suffer. Now that I’m into motorcycles and cars I start to hear al sorts of problems with those vehicues as well. I know for a fact that my mom’s car has had an empty cooling fluid container for over a year. It hasn’t overheated yet but the idea that she drives around with that lovely ’98 Toyota, slowely killing it, destroys my mood.
So I was thinking, you must have had similar things happen to you?
            take care,

This is actually a bit off this topic but I’ll respond anyway.

I’ll put it this way. You’re just starting out. Give it time and you’ll eventually become a bit more numb. Right now things are new and interesting. I can guarantee that after a few years that enthusiasm will start to fade. Not completely, but enough that you can walk away from it and not feel bad.

Thanks for your input and good luck.
