Hesitation when pressing gas pedal from a stop

’97 Honda Accord LX 2.2l 4cyl
I’ve had this problem for a while (Since i got the car a week ago) i just never payed to much attention to it, but since i’m fixing up the car as much as i can, i wanted to know if it is serious and what is possibly wrong.
I step on the gas from lets say a stop sign, it will take it a quarter to half a second to kick in, its more of an annoyance to me, but i would like to fix it. Thank you!

If it’s an automatic, check your transmission fluid level, with the car not running.

If your car has one, you want to clean your Mass Air Flow Sensor. They sell a product just for this. My girlfriends car had this problem too, We just pulled the sensor off and then gave it a few good spray downs and then let it dry for 20 minutes. Put it in and problem solved. This is a good place to start because the can is cheap and if you do it and it isn’t the problem there’s not really a down side.

Often when I find that issue on that engine I find that someone has the timing belt off a tooth. It might be worth checking if nothing else to see what kind of shape the belt is in. You’ll have to remove the valve cover to do the check. At that time you might consider doing a valve adjustment just because you’re there NOT because it will solve your hesitation problem. I’ll also say that Honda’s don’t like aftermarket ignition parts so if you have parts (especially the distributor) that are aftermarket on the ignition system you might consider replacing them with OE parts for best results.

I also like the idea of checking the transmission fluid just in case. Remember to only use Honda transmission fluid in that transmission. These videos may also provide some insight.
