It does this only when it’s fully warm and with a load about 1200+rpm. And it’s not in the valvetrain or bottom end, the main and rod bearings are good. Wrist pin failure?

Any input would be highly appreciated.

Yeah, could be. How do you know it isn’t the parts you mention?

I checked lower bearings, they actually looked pretty, nothing out of the ordinary. I checked the valve clearance, LMA’s, rocker arms or assembly, valves (springs, keepers, retainers, and seats) cam lobes, everything. Got fed up, brought it to a local mechanic for a second opinion, went through everything and said the only thing he didn’t check and suspects is the wrist pin. At idle the car is quiet, after 1300rpm it starts getting loud.

I know you said that you checked all of the valve train but it really sounds like something in that area as it seems like the noise is half the crankshaft speed. Be sure you check the cam pulley bolt as well as the distributor shaft bushings. Be sure the timing belt is tight and the tensioner is holding tension on the belt.

We had a 1997 dodge neon that had a knock like this, the water pump bushing went bad and we found this because the car started leaking coolant everywhere about a week later.. does you car do this at 2000+ rpms?

I’m not saying that’s what the situation is here, but its something to check if you pull the timing cover off.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback.

I thought this at first about the valvetrain, looked at it and everything seemed fine. So I brought it to the mechanic and he said he went through the whole head with a fine tooth comb and nada. I forgot to leave out an important bit of information. I dissected the oil filter earlier on and found brass looking flakes, making me believe it’s a wrist pin bushing. What’s your view on this? It’s not bearing material as I looked earlier and so did the mechanic and couldn’t fine nothing wrong with them, also usually when crank bearing start disintegrating you get a silver and copper looked glitter in the pan and filter, but not so in this case. Also to the other reply, I might have to check the water pump but I’m a firm believer it’s a engine issue do to the brass flakes that I forgot to mention in the first post. I will still give it a whirl and thank you again to the both of you for the feedback, I been really frustrated with this issue as I was planning on selling it but can’t sell something that is broken.

Sorry about not getting back to you on this. I’ve personally never run into a wrist pin problem but I know people who have. The story I got from them was after checking everything they could and not finding a cause and being very frustrated like you, they tore the engine down and that is how they found the bad wrist pin. In other words, not much help and that is why I went away.

No that is a big help, more reinsurance. Thank you.
