Help! Transmission Issues

I just finished putting my 4afe back into my ’92 Corolla. It’s a 4cyl, 1.6litre, with an automatic transmission. And after a few trials and tribulations the engine is running pretty good now. BUT, there is a much larger problem. When I first tried putting the car in gear (drive) it took a tiny little move forward, maybe 5 inches then stopped (might have just been a roll). I put it in reverse, take my foot off the brake and nothing happens, no movement. I put it back in drive and it doesn’t move at all. It does even feel like the transmission is engaging when I shift it into gear. When I shift from gear to gear the engine doesn’t idle up or down like it normally would.

I did have some issues with the torque converter when pulling the engine.

Any suggestions would be extremely helpful!!

you may not have engaged the torque convertor fully into
the trans.check the fluid level.also check any linkage.

Hopefully you had fluid in torque convertor.

              Update:

So there was definitely fluid in the torque converter when I put it back on and there is definitely fluid in the transmission. This thing drove before I worked on it and I never disconnected the shift linkage, but for good measure I checked it out yesterday and it works fine.

I have had absolutely zero time to work on this thing lately but I definitely agree that it is most likely a hanging torque converter. I had a bunch of issues trying to get the torque converter on the shaft and I wasnt 100% sure it was on there all the way.

Today I went to check to see if any fluid was pumping through the transmission. I pulled both tranny cooler lines and started the engine. Not even a drip of fluid out of them. So I’m wondering could that still be an issue with the torque converter not being all the way on the shaft or is that because of another problem?

You may have issues with aeration of the trans fluid. That will affect pump flow.

How does the fluid on the trans dipstick look (if it has one)?

I would be double checking the fluid level also.

The torque converter may not have been in all the way , When you started it up you may have broke the pump gears.

The torque converter drives the pump, if it’s not fully seated the pump won’t run and you won’t have any fluid movement in the transmission, that’s why it doesn’t go into gear. I think you need to pull the trans and reseat the torque converter.

Okay thanks for the info! I really thought that was the case because really unsure whether or not that torque converter was on in the first place. I will hopefully get some time soon and be able to pull the tranny. I really hope the oil pump didn’t break!

                      Thanks again.
