I am on a trip for work and I am 300 plus miles from home. I check into the hotel go to leave for dinner and the vehicle dies. Luckily someone helped me push it back in a spot but now I’m in trouble. Minimal tools and a long way from home.
Vehicle is an 02 Cadilac Escalade with the 6.0 motor. And here’s what I know. The fuel gauge has been jumping all over the place since about 50 miles from the house. I put 1 gallon in it just to be sure it wasn’t mistakingly empty. No luck. So it’s dark and I’m in bed at the hotel. My questions are
What fuses or relays are in the fuel pump circuit on the Tahoe / escalade platform
Is changing the fuel pump possible in a parking lot with minimal tools? Possibly an access panel?
Anyone recommend a shop that won’t rip me off in Galesburg Illinois if I can’t do it myself here?

You need two people for this quick test. One person turns truck on and second person bangs on gas tank while cranking. If the truck turns on most likely the fuses, relay, pcm, and wiring is good. If you have a full tank of gas it won’t be easy to replace fuel pump. There is NO access panel the gas tank has to come down. It’s very easy depending on your skill level. There are tons of DIY videos on YouTube.
        Good luck.

Thank you for the reply. The fuel pump is dead. All fuses and relays are good. I’ve changed a couple before but I couldn’t do it in the hotel parking lot so I bit the bullet and had it towed to a shop. $480 plus $45 tow bill. Ugh

Should have Googled “mobile mechanic” for the area you were at. My son got stuck in Autozone parking lot in OR and Mexican guy came over and replaced a bunch of stuff on his car for $100. Spent several hrs doing it.
            But good it’s fixed now.
GM is known for issues with fuel sending units. Those are the ones that tell gauge what the gas level is. I had similar dance on my Silverado.

Yeah. I replaced my sending unit on my impala a long time ago. Good thing is it comes with the pump. So I got a 2 for one on the caddy.

                In all reality?

That price is decent and fair. I wish I found $45 dollar tow bills, most shops in my area won’t even start their trucks without at least $80 min.

I know it sucks and is a hard pill to swallow for the expense. But that’s not that bad a price for dropping the tank and replacement parts & labor.

                S-

Not that hits matters now but another blessing is at least this didn’t happen in the dead of winter.
That is the WORST (and most likely, due to Murphy’s Law) thing to happen.
