I initially started my vanagon and pulled it out of my garage, and it ran pretty well considering it sat for 2 weeks. After I was finished doing my business in the garage, I attempted to start it again but it just would’t roar to life. I put some gas in just to make sure, but it still wont go. I think it might have a lack of spark. It is currently uninsured and I would preferably like it back in the garage.By the way, the van is on a trickle charger and cranks over just fine. What in the world should I do?

      Thanks you,
      Joey

Guessing is not the way to go when performing a diagnosis. If you suspect you don’t have spark, check for spark and verify that. You also want to verify fuel delivery and the mechanical integrity of the engine. More information on how to diagnose no starts can be found here.

The fuel pump is good as there is a humming sound when i turn the key to the on position. Fuel pressure is also good. How do I check for spark if I don’t have one of those special tools that was featured in your video?

If you can manage to find a helper you can pull the plug out, stick it in the spark boot and set or clamp it on the cylinder head to ground it out. Then have your helper turn the key for a few seconds and watch for spark. Make sure you’re not touching it or you will get a nice jolt.

In my experience if I can smell raw fuel and the engine wont start it’s a spark problem. Your engine needs fuel, spark, oxygen, and compression to run. I don’t think it lost compression in the time between your shut off and attempted restart. As Eric said don’t guess. You’ll end up wasting a lot of time and money this way.

How did you check for fuel pressure? Did you have the spec and did it meet the spec? Just because the fuel pump runs that doesn’t mean that it’s putting out enough psi to run the vehicle. As for checking for spark, all you need is a screwdriver placed in the end of the plug boot held close to a ground to check for spark. I believe that was also mentioned in the video. I addition to that video there were several things in the article I posted that may also help you diagnose your no start. Avoid making assumptions and make a diagnosis based on the facts you can gather about the issue and you’ll have a much better chance of being successful.
