Hi! I can’t figure out what is still holding it on. Exhaust manfifold SEEMS off, Intake is off, dizzy is off.. Now, MAYBE there is a bracket in the front, but, what else could be holding it on?

I removed all the rockers (it has been mentioned that I did not need to) and all the head bolts SEEM out…

      Progress from:

      It’s a 1993 S-10 4.3 VIN W

There may be a bracket holding it on, or you could just need to pry it a bit…

If you pry it, be careful, if it doesn’t come using reasonable force, then look for something else holding it on….don’t pry it too hard….

There’s 13 bolts holding on each head. Count the bolts you removed to make sure you didn’t miss one. There are also guide pins (dowels) that hold the alignment of the head to the block. These can cause the heads to be tough to break loose. I like to leave one head bolt in the valve area screwed in a couple or three threads just to make sure it doesn’t go anywhere until I’m ready for it, and pry gently with a putty knife in the rear corner of each head, just enough to break the seal from the head gasket. A tire iron inserted into the cooling jacket port (on the intake manifold side) can also give you some leverage to (gently) rock the head loose. I’d pull those pushrods out first, though, to prevent damage or bending.

Yea, you’ve got to remove that bracket for the AC and everything else in order to remove the head. You’ll likely have to remove other things on the front of the engine as well. Look at it this way, at least you get to play with your tools. 🙂

Good luck and keep us posted.

That A/C bracket needs to come off the front of the head. I think you *could* get it out by removing the 2-3 bolts that hold it to the head and sneak the head out but it is probably just as easy to pull the whole bracket. I think there are a couple of bolts that go into the front of the block as well as the head on that mount but I am far from sure.

If it were me I would pull the fan to make getting to the front of the bracket easier. You should be able to just pull the bolts and lay the whole bracket and compressor over to the side without opening the A/C lines.

Be sure you have the bottom row of head bolts out, the ones not under the valve cover on the exhaust side can be hard to see with the manifild still in pace.

Also, were all of the manifold fasteners for the exhaust bolts? Sometimes they will be a stud and you can’t get the head out without pulling the manifold completely off.
