To All My Fellow Motor Heads,

I have 124k on my ’02 Honda Accord, which is an automatic(AT). When I drive it in normal driving conditions it is fine no problems, but when I got suck in traffic the other day for about an hour, I noticed the AT starting to slip gears. My diagnosis is that the AT was overheating, causing the slippage? I know that there is a AT filter in the transmission that could be clogged, which would limit the circulation of ATF thus prevent it from cooling down. DOES ANY ONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS!!! PLEASE HELP!!! I am thinking about putting an inline filter where the ATF enters the ATF Cooler… PLEASE HELP!!! WHAT SHALL I DO!!?

      Thank you,

It does sound like your AT was getting too hot and causing grip issues with the bands.

I would start with a fluid change and carefully inspect the cooling system, make sure there is no debris around the radiator, reducing cooling capability of the trans cooler.

If its slipping when hot.The fluid may need to be changed.
Also check the fluid level.Only use genuine Honda fluid.
          I believe its 3 quarts.

Has the fluid ever been changed? If not that’s the place to start. Be sure you only use Honda fluid.

Thanks for mentioning that, I always forget to remind people that Hondas only like Honda trans fluid. I have had customers that get angry that a fluid change on a Honda costs more. I have to explain nicely that using the “global” fluid they brought with them is likely to cause more issues than they are currently having with their worn out fluid.

I changed w/ Honda ATF 2months ago. Filled it once with 3qts. drove a couple days and then drained and added another 3qts. I am thinking I need to flush the ATF cooler and add an inline filter. Suggestions…

Thank you all for your time regarding my question. I really appreciate all of you!!!

To be honest the transmissions of that vintage are known for failure, the 6 cylinder versions in particular. In fact, I don’t believe you have an external cooler if you have a 6 cylinder. It may just be what Honda calls a ‘warmer’ on top of the transmission they run coolant through. SImilar to an engine oil cooler. This means your idea of flushing the cooler and putting an inline filter in are not possible. Also, Honda’s don’t have a serviceable filter. The only way to get to the filter is to disassemble the entire transmission.

That said, check your cooling system to make sure it’s operating properly. If that doesn’t prove out, you may end up having to replace the transmission. I recommend a quality reman over a salvage yard unit.
