In my two month timing belt replacement job (2002 Honda Accord), i misread the torque requirements for the valve cover bolts and sheared two of them off. While trying to drill out the bolts, i gouged the holes past the 1/4″ needed for the helicoil insert. Here is the question: Can i purchase helicoil the next larger, insert it properly and take the correct size helicoil and insert it? Kinda like a Helicoil within a Helicoil? any help is appreciated.

Not sure how that would work. another option is to fill the hole with jb weld. let it set up completely then drill and tap to correct size.

Depending on what engine you have….can you open up the valve cover hole and use a
            oversize fastener?
Assuming the coils currently (large ones) installed are solid?

I agree. That would be the best bet for a valve cover. As long as you clean out the hole really well so the JB weld will stick, then put the valve cover in place and snugged down with the remaining bolts so that it gives you the exact placement of the drill bit for the hole, and so that no shavings find their way into the engine. Once done drilling, take the shop vac and vacuum out all the shavings from the valve cover and around it.

i think a helicoil in a helicoil will work fine after all its just a rockercover (valve cover)rocker covers don’t take much torqueing and are often made of sheet metal any way. there only there to stop oil leaking out they dont need to be super tight i wouldn’t bother geting a torque wrench out i would just gess the torque (just enuff to compress the gasket)but that’s just my opinion

any way getting back to the helicoil once you have taped the lager thread put a little lock tight on both the first and second helicoil to get them to stay in the hole don’t use the lock tight on the bolt. the helicoil is a steel insert and is stronger then alloy thats why some people will actualy use a helicoil when a thread is not even dameged

                i hope this helps
