I just quit my job Monday and got a job at a shop Tuesday. Three great mechs to work for, doing random things. Just beat the crap out of a dodge truck to get the front end fixed. Very fun to work there.

Time to work on my tool list, and start to study. Anyone got any good books to recommend? I have doing DIY stuff for a long time, but reading you to see if I need to correct the work I do. so far it’s just learning too use the best tool to get the job done faster. I have for a long time just made things work.(not the fastest way to to repair vehicles.)

I got a chance to go to a ACdelco AC update course on the new tech and refrigerant. I need a primer for sure. the teacher is very good at his job.

Congratulations bleach! Sometimes it’s great to get a fresh start. Keep up the excitement and study hard. A good attitude goes a long way.

          Best of luck with it.

You’re a saint for loving to beat on big rusty trucks. I really don’t like working on them and I can’t say how much I appreciate yourself and the 2 guys I work with that have no problem at all with them.

Here is a picture of the books I had studied by the time I got into working on cars professionally:

I know it’s a lot all at once, but feel free to ask about any of them. There is a modern version of that Automotive Technology book (on the left) available one Amazon for about $100. You should really start with that or something like it that covers everything broadly. Study it until you understand it and have lots of unanswered questions, then branch out to study more specifics areas as your professional needs or interest directs you.

I am still working at the shop almost 4 months in. Holy crap is there alot to learn. I suck at tires, winter tire season is almost here. so far so good. I am glad they let me work on everything, from oil changes, suspension, front ends, clutches, engine removal, brakes, some basic electric work., some quick diags.

You know your in a good shop if they let you do anything more then just oil changes.

Snap on tools are a bit pricey, but finding that they are better then what I have used so far. it’s good that we only do 3 major front end jobs a month.(full overhaul, on 1 tons mostly)

Crapest thing about this job, is how nasty customers keep the interior of their car. HOLY FREAKING HECK. There has been a few driving scrap cars in the shop. God….
