Heater Stopped Working

Last night, as my wife was increasing either the speed or temperature, the heater in her Mitsubishi Endeavor stopped blowing. She claims that she can still hear SOMETHING but she cannot hear any fan noise and it is not blowing any air. The only two items I can think of checking are the fuses and relays. Is there anything else it could be? If so, how would I troubleshoot it?

First thing that i would do is tap on the blower motor, sometimes when the motor fails a slight tap will get it going. If that doesnt work check power and ground at the motor and go from there.

If the fan is working but you have no heat then check the coolant level

Try AC and just vent, still not blowing, after you check fuses then the likely answer is the blower motor is going/shot, or it has something jammed in it. Tap on it as ridinred mentions, after that, you’d likely need to replace it.

I’d of course just briefly check for power at it’s connector should you get nothing at all, with the fan on high with it set to something(heat/AC/vent) to be certain as to the fix, but that’s about it. If you can hear an audible hum from it, then I wouldn’t even bother with the above, sure sign it’s tryin’, but can’t.

If you can get it going again, still likely need to replace soon, as the brushes or bearings are going unless you know something was obstructing it.

I was able to locate and unscrew the blower motor but I CANNOT remove the wiring connector from the fan. I’d love to test the voltage across the leads. Any ideas how to disconnect the wiring connector from the blower motor?

On a side note, I tried engaging the blower motor manually… turning on the fan and spinning/tapping on the motor. It didn’t budge. I also checked the fuses in the cabin… nothing is blown.

I did find replacement motors online but cannot figure out how to remove the wiring. There appears to be a release tab on the side of the clip but there isn’t any way to depress the clip and pull the plug (without pulling on the wires themselves… which will ruin the connector).

There are several variations of connector. Some have a small locking tang that you pull to allow the release tab to be depressed. Most connectors have more one locking mechanism account of the excessive vibration in autos. Look at some of the repair videos to see if you see similar connectors.

The blower motor may have electronic controls or dropping resistors depending on the car. If the dropping resistors fail the blower motor will not run and there will be no fuse blown. The blower motor might run on high but not the other speeds.

You can back check the wires in the connector for voltage. Use straight pins inserted in the back side of the connector making contact with the wires to obtain voltage measurements.

Its possible that the connector is melted into the blower motor itself, I have seen this numerous times on acuras.

Go buy yourself a cheapo digital multi meter and check for power and ground at the motor. If you have power on the power side and the ground side then I would suspect a fautly resistor/transistor or a bad ground depending on the circuit.

It may have a locking tab as suggested. It may also have melted as suggested. Is there any way you could take a picture and post it here?
