Hello I have a 1993 Chevy Cavalier that my Grandma had given to me 2 yrs ago before she had passed away. This car was her baby. She really did not drive it much but had the oil changed and tires rotated and anything that it needed she had done to it even though it really didnt go many places. When I got it it was pretty much brand new and only had less then 60k miles on it. It now almost has 90k as it has been my daily driver most of the time unless bad weather then i drive my 4×4 sonoma. I have tried to keep the same care for this car as I promised my Grandma i would. However I know that things will go bad the more you run something especially that didnt go many places really but taken well care of kinda helped alot. The thing is the heater core had gone out and I had it fixed. When I got it back i drove it around a few places one day had it running around all day and it ran great and no issues or anything. It still runs great but the other night i drove it for my pizza delivery job and it was getting darker so i went to turn on the headlights and discovered they would not come on. I played with switches… the dimmer, the door dome off switch. I took it to the shop the heater core was fixed and me and the guy both checked fuses and relays he used a tester. No blown fuses or anything. He did say it seem that the 2 rows of the fuse panel werent getting juice but i dont see how that is so cuz one fuse is for the turn signals and they work and one for the the taillights and they work. The brake lights work. The heater works and one of those is the heater fuse. If NONE of those had power wouldnt none of that work? He said I would have bring it back down becasue today he couldnt have looked at it anymore but if it is something that might be easy to do and anyone could give me some insights here I would appreciate it. He did say something about pulling the fuse panel out and checking under it. I Should add the power locks DID work when i went to work. When i brought it home to get my truck I noticed the power locks didnt lock the car. On one delivery before it got dark i was on a rough kinda side road and the car bounced on a pot hole. The heater was on the radio was on and I did notice the radio kinda faded a bit and then i smelled like a burning smell. A few times i have hit things like that in this same car and it seems like maybe a battery cable could be loose or ground is somewhere but it only does that if it bounces on rough roads which is pretty much all of them lol. I thought i should share that but that guy that cdid the heater core was supposed check that and I knwo him well and if i put it on a list he would have checked it but that dont mean SOMETHING isnt loose. Thank you in advance for your help 🙂

More likely the wires leading to the fuse box that power the headlights, interior, and power windows were damaged (together) somewhere. Maybe he said he’d have to take the fusebox down to get a clearer view of which wires lead to where. But normally rows or columns within a fuse box don’t have any discernable logical relationship with each other, other than their layout. A service manual which shows the logical circuit and the actual physical wiring diagram of the car would help a lot, since you’ll see there where those wires going back to the battery might meet up and start looking there.

Thank you for the info! Yea i been trying to look for a wiring diagram. I was wondering if there isnt a relay somewhere or a connector of some sort on a wiring harness that has got some burnt wires or came loose. Another guy on a chevy site said that some of the older connectors can come out as from that time period he basicially waas saying some are known to come loose over time. Hitting these pot holes and things on rough roads may have jarred some wires out of a connector that had come a bit loose even he said. I guess the best thing is to try find the wiring diagram. AS for the fuse panel i think he was meaning that he would have pull the fuse panel down to look up under further hoping the problem was a connection there to the panel. Thanks again.

There is another question I was wondering as far as this car goes. The headlights dont work but the turn signals and brake lights and taillights do. It also runs great and drives just fine. SO would it be ok to drive it around which wouldnt be too far or nothing just to do some local errands during the nice sunny days we are supposed have. Although i guess if i did i should make sure the wipers at least work as it supposed rain here sunday if i indeed decided to drive it to church then. I do have the truck but i I have a gas line leak and really dont wanna drive it if i dont have to

I don’t see why not. They’re only defective once you need to use them. 🙂

I’ve seen circuit diagrams on the network for your car, but not the actual physical layout diagrams. You can probably trace them through the wiring colors indicated though.

I was thinking about getting one of those repair manuals that pretty much tell you how to build the car from the ground up which they are around 20 or 30 bucks. Well worth it to me for future use if something else goes wrong that could be easier to fix rather then take to garage and get it back God knows when. If all else fails I guess i could do what i seen online a pic of LED flashlights duct tape to the hood lol  😆
