okay i finally found out for sure i need to get my head gaskets replaced and I was told that it would be at least $2500 just for that not including if the heads need to be re-surfaced. I found this a bit high with the parts being well under $200 and 8-10 hours for labor at $80 per hour. for ten hours and 200 in parts that is around a $1000. can anyone give some advice on this or a better idea of what it should cost? if it helps i am from central new york

Might suggest you look up the actual work time required for your specific engine for starters.
In your figuring, did you account for time and parts for broken fasteners?
Your figure of 8 – 10 hours labor what exactly did you account for?
Obviously disassembly.
Did you include surface clean up and prep.?
Valve adjustment?
There are different time factors with different makes and models.May 5, 2017 at 1:09 am #880125the 8-10 hours i was told was from subaru to just replace the head gaskets with out any resurfacing being done. they said it would be $600 more if timing belt and water pump needs to be replaced. they did not give much in details outside of a time frame besides if they found anything besides head gaskets it would cost more. it is a 2010 subaru impreza 2.5l sedan non-turbo.
May 5, 2017 at 1:45 am #880127There are a number of videos on YouTube showing what is involved.

might suggest you have a look.May 5, 2017 at 1:45 am #880128Get another quote, and look for a shop that specializes in that vehicle make.
I think a complete rebuilt engine is around $3500?
Not sure where you live, but $80/hour shop rate is way less than what is charged in my area.
Also, $200 for parts sounds low.I found this on a search, they say around $1500-1600:

I agree with those who suggest getting quotes elsewhere.
Perhaps there’s a shop that specializes in engine repairs near you.May 5, 2017 at 3:48 am #880132the head gaskets from subaru are according to the local website between 50-60 each i found a kit from fel-pro for a complete head gasket repair kit for 140 and 15 for the head bolts. like i said the estimate that i got was from a subaru dealership so i assume that they would have a good idea since this happens. but from the website for oem parts the parts for a head gasket change comes to closer to 350 in parts
May 5, 2017 at 3:53 am #880134i am planning on looking elsewhere for it to get done bugs me more that the place that worked on the car before i got it seems to have not done the work that was said they did. I plan on also finding out if the head gaskets are from subaru since i was told they where changed and i am doubting they have been i have not put on even 5000 miles since they where done with overheating issues popping up over the whole time but not on any normal basis. and since i got it with over 100,000 miles no one cares since it is passed the lemon law rules in new york
May 5, 2017 at 9:40 am #880151I don’t know why some people love Subaru so much? My 2008 Impreza has had more problems than any car I have ever owned.
Sorry, just venting. Post brought up a sore point for me.May 5, 2017 at 6:44 pm #880162[quote=”discoglen25″ post=187510]i am planning on looking elsewhere for it to get done bugs me more that the place that worked on the car before i got it seems to have not done the work that was said they did. If there was no guarantee on the car when you bought it, you’re out of luck.
Of course the seller could have lied to you.
Or they were replaced but the shop didn’t check carefully for/missed a crack in the head–or they did something else wrong.Dealer parts and labor are always more expensive.
Sadly, Subaru head gasket failures are not uncommon in your model even though they used a different gasket technology in 2010.
They finally redesigned the heads in 2014 or 2015,IIRC.May 6, 2017 at 5:31 am #880201well from all the double talk i am pretty sure i am being lied to by the small dealer i got it from. either the place he deals with for preparing cars lies to him or he is in the loop. the place i had to take it too when i had a problem just after i got the car told him they put a new radiator in and they never did it still had the insulation that is on a subaru radiator from when the car is built in a factory no one even a subaru dealer replaces it if a new radiator is installed.
