I had some problems removing a harmonic balancer on a GM 3.1 engine with an auto transmission. I didn’t have an impact wrench, and the bump the starter method would not work – the socket would always slip off the bolt and started to round off the head of the bolt.
I decided to use the following hand tools to solve the problem:
Puller bolt
18″ breaker bar
17x18mm obstruction wrench
25″ breaker bar & 15mm socketI installed the puller bolt on the balancer and then put one end of the obstruction wrench over the puller bolt. Then I inserted the 18″ breaker bar through the other end of the obstruction wrench. I positioned the 18″ breaker bar under the subframe and the steering knuckle. This set up kept the balancer from moving when I used the 25″ breaker bar and socket to turn the balancer bolt. It works great when loosening or tightening a harmonic balancer bolt…
