I recently bought a 1997 Accord and I noticed the transmission shifts pretty hard. I heard many myths about not changing your transmission fluid but I am not going to get into that. Is there anything I should check before deciding if I need a fluid change or not? Is it safe if I do change the fluid? I need help and I cant afford to fix this thing right now.

Hello! I have a 1997 Suzuki Baleno 1.3l(european Esteem) and my transmission is also hard to shift. The transmission oil was not changed in 150.000km (93.000 miles) and I suspected that was the cause for my hard shifting… so I changed it for Texaco Multigear 75w-90 GL-4 and surprise, surprise it only improved a little bit. So, unless you put really good stuff in there (Redline transmission oils have very good reviews and heal some shifting problems), I would say that changing your transmission oil will not do much! 😉

You could try changing the fluid with Honda OE
transmission fluid to see if the hard shifting
changes.here is a video to help.

Changing transmission fluid on a vehicle with no service history is a roll of the dice. It may or may not work out.

            How does the fluid look?

If the fluid level is good, then check the throttle cable. If that doesn’t work, try changing the transmission fluid. If that doesn’t work, you may need a new transmission.

The most common cause of harsh shifting on Honda automatics is using something other than Honda fluid. That said without knowing the service history it IS a roll of the dice. A second issue is many people check the fluid level incorrectly, the engine needs to be OFF when you do this. I see many Honda transmissions overfilled because they checked and set the fluid level with the engine running. As for the TV cable be careful with that adjustment if you go there because if you get it wrong you could damage the transmission.
