Handbrake Adjustment

I have an automatic civic and adjusting the handbrake.

      Just a question:
Should the car hold its position on a flat surface if the handbrake is up and it is on D? (my car rolls a little)

My car stays fine on N and P. But not sure if the transmission is holding it or the handbrake. Suggestions?

The wheels are disconnected from the engine in “neutral,” so no, the transmission is not holding the car. In park, the transmission *is* holding the car.

In drive, the car tries to move forward, against the e-brake.

As far as I know, it’s normal for the car to roll a bit with it in drive. I know for a fact, that properly adjusted e-brake will not hold a manual car in place when it’s in first.

However, your e-brake *should* hold the car on a steep heel, in neutral, with the ebrake up.

How many clicks does it take for your handbrake to fully engage? Standard is 4-5 clicks. When testing the handbrake I find a steep hill, put it in neutral and apply the handbrake.. if it holds, then great, if it rolls, needs to be adjusted. As far as holding on a flat surface in drive, i’m pretty sure it’s supposed to hold. According to a guy in massachussettes, your car will fail a vehicle inspection if it doesn’t hold on a flat surface in drive.

clicks to engage: 3-4 (takes abit of strength to rotate the tyre on jack stands)

            max click: 7

Steep hill + neutral: Holds strong (before and after adjustment, maybe holds better after adjustment as I noticed no changes as the car held its position on both occurrences)

Flat surface + drive: Reason why I adjusted, because there was little resistance. I notice that it is better now after the adjustment I made but car still moves.

I did about 3 clock turns when adjusting the brake. I’m scared of turning it too much that it causes the cable to snap or something. How much do you usually turn for adjusting handbrake?

Do you have drum or rotor rear brakes ???

They are rotor with disc brakes

Have you adjusted at the cable or wheel or both ?

Only at the handbrake console. Not too familiar on how to do it on the rear calipers as it isn’t stated on the service manual. It would produce the same result to my understanding, I could go further with either one but my concern is “how much do I go” and “what is ideal”.

Ok firstly loosen it off at the console just so we don’t risk over tightening the cable when adjusting. Then jack up the rear of the car and remove the wheels. Once the wheels have been removed you should see a plug or hole in each rotor. Get a torch and look through the hole while spinning the rotor. Look for a gear inside the rotor it should be at the bottom. Once you find it get a flathead and turn the best upwards until it lock then back down 4-5 flicks. Once you’ve done this with both rotors put the wheels back on and adjust the adjustment at the console until its where you like it 🙂

Remember always start at the wheel and you’ll be fine 🙂

This is actually what I was following. It says to adjust it at the console- nothing about adjustment on the wheels
