Greetings All,
Well, been watching ETC for a while now, slick tricks and very useful information. Thank you for that.
Have considerable knowledge in the field and have worked at small shops up to dealerships.
“Was” in the field for, eh, 10-12 years.
Best lesson: “Remember to breathe and step away before throwing tools or breaking something.”
Worst lesson: Select your machine shops (or other outside work) carefully!!
Timing chain failure on a 1995 Toyota 22R. I had a local machine shop checkout the head. They machined the head mating surface (requested that they pressure test it) and also had them polish the crank.
I didn’t “check” their work with micrometer or even beyond a simple visual. Installed. No start. Checked everything and compression on number 4 was 0 psi. Pulled head, checked valves and they were bent. Called shop about “pressure test” and they said that they pressure tested the water side. WHAT?!!
Installed new valves, lapped them, and reassembled engine.
When I was seating the rings, spun two bearings. Dis-assembled and miced the crankshaft. The machine shop had TURNED the crank, NOT POLISHED as requested. Are you kidding me?!! Really?!!!
Total rebuild. AARRRGGG!!!!! Split expense with machine shop. Will NOT happen again.Check, Check, Check.
Right tool for the right job,
