A friend of mine called me up and asked me if i could take a look at a problem he has with his 2001 chevy silverado with the 5.7. i checked it out and heard a fairly loud ticking coming from behind the glove box. it happens all the time even when its not running (with the key in the run position). all the electrical in the cab works as its supposed to. i called a mechanic friend of mine and he said it was some sort of relay back there that sometimes makes noise on that gen. of truck. he told me where it was and how to replace it but he didnt know what it was for. im curious to see if anyone has heard of this problem or knows what exactly causes that noise.

Vent Actuator. Think it’s a fairly common issue with those trucks.
This site is great, but really, if you have odd-ball issues with your specific vehicle you REALLY want to also read and possibly sign up for a couple forums specific to that vehicle. Even if you don’t have issues for that matter, learn what you can expect from it, what you can get from it, and how to fix it from people that have likely already done it.

We’ve had a few people with similar issues with a similar vehicle in the past and I believe it was an actuator problem. You might want to type in a couple of keywords into the search to see if you can find those posts.
sorry for the late reply, been a little busy. i know that its a pretty common problem with that generation of silverado trucks but i did a little more searching and came up with alot of people saying its some sort of fan actuator thing. but the one thing i havent been able to find is whether or not the actuators will still work if thats the problem. in the case with this chevy, all vents, fan speeds, blend doors and what not still work just fine. i turned every knob and pushed every button and everything still works. could everything still work if that actuator relay is making that noise?
It depends on which actuator. Many have a blend door, which is usually the biggest pain to get at, if it’s ticking then you tend not to get much if any heat/ac.
That ticking noise is due to the usually plastic teeth(or tooth) being broken and it clicking for whatever duration it’s set for. It could still be opening far enough to work relatively fine.
Easiest method [to me] to verify is just to yank the actuator connectors in the area its coming from one at a time til you find the culprit.
If it’s not creating a problem other than being annoying, you may wish to leave it be if you’re ok with that. Would drive me bonkers. Usually not super-expensive for an after-market replacement($12-60, depending on how common it is), you could try to find the teeth/piece that broke as it’s usually still in the housing, and just use something like q-bond to try to restore it with a bit of filing down afterwards.
would the bad teeth/tooth keep ticking? no matter what i do it ticks consistantly. it almost sounds like a loud clock no matter what settings i have it on. like i said, my mechanic buddy showed me which one to replace im just curious to know what causes the problem.
