We got a new shop foreman 2 months ago.

So far 5 techs have quit, possibly a 6th one. One was fired and told “you were fired to be made an example”. Two techs have filed complaints with HR.

Two techs have gone to HR and filed complaints.

Our QC scores have dropped, efficiency scores have dropped, time to complete scores have dropped, and fixed first time scores have all dropped since our new foreman has taken over.

We have about 20 techs in our shop, 14 are actively seeking other jobs.

Techs are being handed RO’s for oil changes while hourly lube techs are given alignments, brake repairs, flushes. Tech went from 40-60 flag hour weeks to barely cracking 20 flag hours a week.

Customers are filing complaints on quality of work, things not being done properly. A

And yet this foreman still has his job.

The service manager is actively trying to write up and fire the shop foreman but the foreman manages to talk his way out of write ups somehow.

Personally I don’t know how much more of this moron I can take.

Over the years I have seen situations such as yours and I have discovered that if you can stick it out long enough those guys will eventually hang themselves.

          I truly hope so.

He keeps bragging that he isn’t going anywhere because the operations manager loves the extra money he brings in.

Well that’s drying up pretty quickly because people come in for an express oil change and our lube techs ignore the work. So a 30 min express oil change takes two hours. And when the loofy’s (nickname we give them) get the work, they make sure they take their sweet time doing it.

Now customers aren’t coming back, the service advisers are complaining about the foreman along with almost literally every tech.

It’s been two, maybe three months. I don’t know if we can survive another 4 months with this guy.

It’s weird. We have several dealerships under our name. He came to us from the same company, but a different dealership.

As it stands it doesn’t look good for him.

He was sent home early yesterday with a disciplinary write up, after a 45 min meeting with HR and the service manager. He brags the operations manager “loves his numbers” which is hilarious because they’ve all dropped in every category. Now that HR has been getting involved it doesn’t matter if the operations manager likes the numbers and extra sales he brings in, he’s apparently breaking laws and, not a single operations manager can protect him from that.

I’ve seen this before in other companies and other fields. I just don’t know if I can stand another 6-8 months that it will take for this guy to get fired.

Sounds like this guy won’t make it another 6-8 months. I feel for you.

Thanks Ronbo. We’ve lost some really good techs. I’m only staying because I work with amazing guys. Otherwise I’d be a ghost there.

Sent home early and a write-up? Things are looking good then, by the sounds of it.

It took 5 write ups for a lube tech to get fired. I can only imagine how many it will take to get this moron demoted.

Morons don’t get demoted, they get fired or promoted.

This sounds a lot like the the dealer group I work for, except the nonsense starts at the top and goes all the way to the bottom. I’m not old, nor young, but I have worked places with good management and places with bad management. Good management knows that moral effects productivity which reflects on the bottom line. Unfortunately there’s no way to measure moral, so as far as the penny pinchers go, it’s an afterthought since they can’t measure it on a spreadsheet. Maybe techs need to get an internal CSI type scoring system to rate the dealerships treatment of them.

0/10, management magically removed .5 labour off an RO for reasons unknown.

The best option, assuming that the people above him in the chain of command see how counter productive his actions are. Is to organize on one level or another. Put management in the hot seat so you can see their hand. If they want to hack and slash everything to zero, then it’s time to go. If they don’t want everyone to leave, they can walk him out.

He needs to go back to Finance. I guess he was a service writer before Finance, but did a horrible job at that. So he went into Finance, horrible at Finance, now he’s trying to be a shop foreman.

When someone grabs a RO off the waiter board he demands to see what we have, so he can switch RO’s around. I asked one day “why the fuck do you hang these up in order they need to be done only to switch them with me 4 times”

His reply “You’ll take what ever I give you.” So we have waiters that should take 30 mins, now take 2 hours. Once he pisses off our lube techs then the waiters take 4 hours and the service advisers lose their shit.

He’s a disabled vet that talks about being in he grunts. I asked him some pretty basic tactical questions and he was looked lost. He later told me he was tank mechanic.

If he’s a disabled vet then he may be very difficult to get rid of. Not impossible, but lots of careful documentation is required.

It’s probably why they bounce him around so much. I know for a fact the service manager is actively trying to write him up and fire him. Hopefully he is successful.

The bigger the dumbass the higher they are likely to climb the ladder , because they are smart enough to know which ass they need to kiss , but to stupid to handle the responsibility, and how to treat people .

I put in for a different dealer. I interviewed today with another dealer and he told me some things that blew my mind, without me even telling him which dealer in the franchise I work for. He knew exactly what was wrong and why. In fact he has hired a few people from my current dealership and they are very happy at this new one.

I hate changing jobs, but this really comes down to self preservation.
