      So, I bought my son a POS 1999 Monte Carlo last year for $1,000.00. 3.1 V6. We’ve been able to get about 20k miles out of it, I can’t really complain. Problem is the body is pretty sound, and not too bad to drive for a college student. Also, I’m pretty sure the engine is not original and the prior owner did a crappy job of replacing the engine. Pretty sure the engine was from a pre OBDII system and they attempted to convert the engine to OBDII. However, I have to make it last for another year or two until he’s out of college. First off, it had a CEL and drivability is terrible. Feels like it has no power, and has difficulty accelerating.

      I plugged my scan tool in and got a camshaft position sensor fault, and a P1111 and P0113 which are the codes for the intake air temp sensor. I replaced the camshaft position sensor & found the connector to the IAT sensor was bad. Put a new connector on and all is good with those codes. Cleared codes and the IAT and Camshaft sensor is good to go.

      But now those are fixed it has thrown a P0171 on bank 1. I looked at the fuel trim at idle and is 26.4. Points to a vacuum leak. I sprayed some carb/choke cleaner at the intake between cylinder 3&5 and the RPM’s bumped up a little bit. Also, son reports a very slow coolant loss issue. I looked at the back of the engine it appears wet and got a very slight whiff of coolant. I think I have an intake gasket leak. Want to run that by the forum to see what it thinks.

      Onto the plugged cat issue, I have an exhaust leak on the manifold at cylinder #1. I got the engine up to operating temp, and up to 2,000 RPMS. The #2 O2 sensor was all over the place. It would drop down to .268 kick up to .65, back down to .3 back up etc. would not hold hat .5 volt.

      I have a vacuum gauge on the way from amazon to confirm scan tool readings. I’ll hook it up Wednesday night and see what that is. But, the exhaust leak, and crazy reading from the O2 sensors are pointing me to plugged cat. Below is some data that I recorded:

        Those engines are well known for blowing their intake gaskets. Since it’s barely leaking, now’s the time to do it. If it’s left it could eventually cause the oil and coolant to cross contaminate and kill the engine. Or if any oil gets inot the cooling system, the rubber will be quickly destroyed.

        One of the easiest ways to troubleshoot a clogged cat, is to remove the O2 sensor and see if the engine runs better.

          For a vacuum leak rev the engine while watching your fuel trims. If they drop when you rev it then you have a vacuum leak if it gets worse then you have a fuel delivery problem. The Cat can be bad and not be clogged. generally when your cat is clogged up the engine wont have very much power and in extreme cases the vehicle will barley move.

            Fuel trims drop when rev’d. I kicked it up to about 2,500 rpms, and fuel trim dropped to -3.4.

            I’m leaning to the intakes manifold gaskets. I’ll try the propane test and see if anything happens with that.

              Have not found any dex-cool snot yet, oil looks ok. Had to pull the filter the other day to hook up a new battery cable.

              I’ll pull the upstream O2 and see what happens.

                OP says – I have an exhaust leak on the manifold at cylinder #1 and a P0171. The exhaust leak may skew the O2 sensor setting P0171.

                  I’ll fix exhaust manifold leak first. Clear codes and see what the FT’s are and see if the P0171 comes back.
