So I am going to be driving my 2003 odyssey to florida in june. It currently has 168k miles on it with ORIGINAL 5spd tranny. I got the alternator checked yesterday and its about to die so i ordered a new one, and while I’m in there even though it isn’t necessary right now, I am going to do the timing belt and water pump. so I ordered a kit. I plan on doing another drain and refill on the tranny with honda fluid, and I will probably change the engine oil before I leave. I am also going to get an alignment because the steering wheel shimmies really bad between 60 and 80 mph. I am also going to change the thermostat, rad hoses, and coolant obviously. I also want to install a tranny cooler before I go. Is there anything Im forgetting? and does anyone have any suggestions about the tranny cooler? I am also going to do the power steering belt and the serpentine belt as well. Thanks. 🙂

I don’t think an alignment will fix your shimmie from 60-80mph. Have you had your tires balanced yet?

check your spare tire and battery. I agree about the
wheel alignment not fixing the shimmy. Have the wheels
speed balanced. For now rotate them to see if the issue
          changes.

Battery is new, spare tire is a good tip, I just replaced the two front tires, still vibrates, could the rears cause this. I was also thinking it might be cv axles?

i really wouldnt replace the rad hoses, thermostat or coolant unless the engine is overheating. My thermostat blew so i had to get a new one and add coolant because it all leaked out and i didnt replace the rad hoses just cleaned the upper hose where it connected to the thermostat and radiator.

Well I will most likely leave the thermostat alone from what you experienced. I am going to do the rad hoses, at least the upper, and I am going to replace the coolant since I’m doing the water pump/timing belt. plus the coolant has 168k on it so its 48k past due, since honda says 120k. I also believe that the rad hoses are original so I just want to be on the safe side.

Sounds like you really preparing. Good job. Always better to be safe than sorry and broke down along the road somewhere. Have fun in beautiful Florida!!

Why would you wait until something happens before replacing said items? Which will inevitably happen a lot sooner if the items were not replaced.

Might as well do the other hoses and thermostat as well; at least the lower hose along with the thermostat. It should not cost a bundle more and you’re draining the coolant anyway.

as the saying goes “if it aint broke dont fix it” hoses will outlast most of anything else on the car. I replaced my PCV hose cuz it somehow got a hole. My T-Housing blew hose was fine.

The PCV hose got a hole most likely because of wear and tear. Waiting until something tears or breaks is illogical, to say the least. Get ready for more expensive repairs.

Wear and tear? its a crankcase vent hose what wear/tear can be put on it?

Thank You for all the advice everyone! I think that I will do the thermostat if I have time, I am defiantly doing the hoses though. I don’t think that I will have a problem being that I am going to use Honda parts. I use all aftermarket parts for my other vehicles, but I prefer to use genuine Honda parts on the odyssey, plus they are only a little bit more, but they are always a guaranteed fit. So I am looking at the Tru-Cool 4544 tranny cooler, and a magnafine inline filter. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I am basing my decision from what I have gathered over at the ody club forum.Oh and I drove it from Pittsburgh to Erie last weekend and it still has a horrible shimmie/vibration in the steering wheel from 60mph to 80 mph then it stops. so the new front tires did not fix it. I really do not want to drive it to Florida that way because I will most likely get carpel tunnel from it, its that bad. Thanks for all the help everyone, I can always count on the people at ETCG.

As for the vibration try checking for a bent rim if youve already checked for balance. Another thing to try is try swapping in your spare tire one location at a time to isolate this vibration.

Ok, I guess it is possible that the rim could be bent, but wouldnt the vibration go away in the steering wheel if I rotated the front two tires to the back? because I have rotated them and it is the same.

Have you checked your shocks? Their job is to damping oscillations. Also how ugly are your rotors rust wise? They are rotating with the tires too. Make sure your suspension components are tight
