Hi all, long time no see ! I’m back to being car mad as I now own a car I have wanted for a long time, a Ford Mondeo ST220. Love the thing, its quite a fast beast 🙂

I am having an issue with the car though, in which the gear stick feels like its worn down a bit and doesn’t slot into gears quite smoothly (second is the worst), no grinding etc when shifting, it just feels like something in the actual shifting mechanism has worn down so it doesn’t follow the “lines” correctly. I’m not sure what it could be other than some bushing, but I am unsure. I plan to have the gear linkages looked at but don’t know if these would cause this either.

I have a video if the issue (car stationary), hopefully you will see what I mean, it can also be difficult to shift into 6th sometimes, as it likes to slot back down into 4th.

I have asked on a couple of other Mondeo specific forums, but have yet to receive any advice sadly 🙁 Hope someone can point me in the right direction !

I believe those actually use shift cables and I would say that the cables are worn out and have stretched. New cables and probably good to go

Cheers, I think you are right, the more I drive it and pay attention to it, it seems like that would be the cause. Sometimes the gear change is smooth as butter, sometimes a bit notchy, regardless of revs.

Il get the cables checked and see what the garage says, is there any obvious signs they are worn/stretched visibly ?

newer cables are not easy to visually inspect, you might be able to see some gaps between the strands but that’s about it.
