If I top off my gas tank, there is a leak.
I looked under the car and pulled away the plastic trim and it is a smaller tube on the filler neck where the rubber hose connects to the metal. Of course the filler neck is made of rust at this point. Prolly have to get a new one.

I looked online for replacement filler necks and there seems to be this smaller extra tube. Is there any point to that tube? Also I did not look real well (didn’t feel like jacking up the back end) but to replace the tube (including that rubber hose) on this car, does the gas tank NEED to be dropped? I saw some videos about that and it looks to be a messy job. Thinking of just leaving the rubber parts alone and replacing just the metal.
Here is a photo. That small tube looks useless. Does it do something?
I would have guessed maybe it was part of the fuel return system but it branches into and out of the same filler neck.

The smaller tube is far from useless. As you fill the tank with gasoline the air that the gas displaces goes out the smaller tube. Without it you wouldn’t be able to put fuel in the tank.

That does make sense. However, at the rubber part the tubes meet, BEFORE the gas tank.

Is that smaller tube there then to prevent the problem some cars have where you have to pump slowly sometimes to prevent the gas pumps from cutting off?

Yeah I know these seem like stupid questions. Honestly thought, the filler neck is one thing I have never once thought about or looked at in any car. Not until this Acura leaked when topped off.

You’re questions are not stupid at all. The extra tube does prevent difficulty filling the tank
