Got to work on the head of the auto department’s car today, 1999 Pontiac Bonneville. Starter r&r, blower motor r&r, pull codes and diagnose a P0300 random misfire:
There was a lot of extra crap around the starter.. also with the blower motor, I had to destroy the old blower motor, remove the fuse box and bend the huge metal bracket that is located right directly in front of the motor. Pulled the code(s) using a TechII and got a P0300. Checked static fuel pressure and got 44-45 psi. Spec is 48 to 55 static psi.
Also I couldn’t figure out how to get the hood open right away, so i just decided to get right to work and work on a ‘live’ energized starter since i couldn’t disconnect the battery. so, i got a couple of sparks during my replacement, which i expected. but.. when the wrench accidentally contacted the starter case ground… I got covered in a shower of sparks. I backed away until the light show was over, but my wrench continued to cook w/ over 400 amps of cooking power. I knocked off the wrench with a broom handle and had to pick it up with plier and dip it in the sink to cool it down. I then did what i should have done in the first place and wrapped my wrench in electrical tape (which you can see in the above picture.)
Learned a valuable lesson today: after I was done checking fuel psi, I went to purge the fuel pressure tester into a foam coffee cup… and for that instant i had my safety goggles pushed up on my noggin’ because they were fogged/greased up and it was hard to see…. and as soon as I pressed the purge valve, the cup exploded with gas and it shot up into my hair and forehead just above my eyes…. i was kinda in shock and just barely open an eye just enough for me to get to the hand wash and start the cleaning process. I thought about using the eye wash station but i saw that it was tied to an alarm so I just used the hand wash.
