Fuel Tank Filler Hose

Pictured below is my new gas tank about to be installed into my 96 Honda Accord. When I removed the old tank and hoses, I did not make a note on how far to extend the small fuel hose inside of the larger fuel filler hose. I just hacked off the old hoses and realized later that there ware actually two hoses, not one, going into the fuel tank.

My questions is this, how far should I extend the smaller hose up into the larger flexible filler hose? Also, what is the purpose of this second hose? Does it equalize pressure when the gas tank is being filled?

      Thanks.

Can you check with a Honda dealer locally to see if they list that hose as a part or if they designate it as a “field service item.” I’d gamble it is a preformed piece to match the curves of the large hose. Sadly I don’t know the purpose of the smaller hose.

Yeah……that hose equalizes the pressure when adding fuel. You might need to cut open the old hose and measure the hose you cut.

College Man – yes, the part you are referring to is #53. I have the same diagram from Majestic Honda and I ordered that part. However, it is listed as a bulk fuel hose, and what they sent me was a coil of fuel hose that I can cut to size for this part, as well, as any other flexible fuel hoses that need replaced.

Unfortunately, it does not help me figure the length of the hose needed.

College Man – I noticed this was for a motorcycle. Was that the one you meant to send?

can you look inside the old or as suggested cut
open the old hose to expose what you need.

College man – that was the problem that got me in this mess to begin with. When I was dropping the tank, I cut the rubber hoses for better access. In the process, I cut through the hose that I am holding in my hand in the picture above. I probably cut it about 3/4 from the tank, and the little hose was that far into the rubber filler neck. The other part of the rubber filler hose, the remaining 2 or 3 inches was discarded, but I can’t remember how much rubber hose was on that side of the cut. I don’t think it was too far past that point, and probably not into the metal part of the filler tube.

Ironically, you said about 12 inches when referring to the motorcycle hose, but actually, I think that is close to what I need for the Accord. I will probably just take the rubber hose up through the end of the rubber filler neck hose, and stop it there; a distance of about 12 inches.

Thanks for bearing with me on this.
