I installed a new fuel pump in my 1996 chevy s10 4.3l v6. The pump turns on but will not pump fuel. I think the pump might be defective. The fuel lines are not clogged or restricted in anyway and the tank has new fuel in it. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be. Thanks.

sounds like a bad pump
September 20, 2011 at 11:00 am #445875How are you determining the fuel pump is not pumping? I would take a injection rail test with a gauge and see what pressure you have. If you don’t have pressure but the pump is running then the pump is defective or the pump output hose/line linking to the sending unit inside the tank is pumping the fuel right back into the tank.
If you have pressure but the engine won’t start then you have an injector pulse issue. You can actually have pressure at the rail but still no delivery because the injectors serve that function based on a magnetic pick up signal.September 20, 2011 at 11:00 am #445876Quoted From jacobnbr1:

October 3, 2011 at 11:00 am #445877I don’t have pressure but the pump turns on for a few seconds when I turn the key to on and I can here the pump running when I turn the car over. This is the second pump I have installed in a week the first one didn’t run at all so they sent me a replacement, It is a aftermarket pump I purchased on ebay I thought I would save money. And the pump did come with a new wire connector. Any suggestions on a brand of pump ac delco, bosch, etc. to get I’m thinking about getting a refund and going to a parts store to get a new one. thanks for the responses.

October 5, 2011 at 11:00 am #445880The pump may not be the issue if you can here it running. You might want to check the actual fuel pressure while you crank as well as check for spark.
October 6, 2011 at 11:00 am #445881I found the problem with the fuel pump is was the new wire connector that comes with the new pump, The wires are color matched so you would think black to black, gray to gray, purple to purple etc. but that is not the case the wiring was wrong I had to experiment to find the correct wiring until the pump pumped in the right direction. thanks for the tip about the wire connector. My s10 is running great Thanks again guys for all your help.
