Fuel pump not pumping gas

So I’m working on a bit of a project car, a 95 Plymouth Voyager. Reason I say project is because I was going to junk it but I was somehow convinced to keep it. So here is my issue…my rear brake lines rusted out and I found myself without brakes one day. The rear lines are right next to the tank hidden so you need to at the very least unbolt the tank to move it out of the way. There was however a full tank of gas in the car and moving it would have been quite a pain since I’m not really equipped to deal with such an oblong object. So I decided to drain some(all) of the gas out of the tank. I figured I was either going to junk the vehicle or fix it and either way the gas needed to be removed. So I used the electric fuel pump to pump all the fuel out of the tank.

I replaced the lines and bolted everything back up. I added about maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of a tank of gas and I noticed the fuel pump sounds like its just spinning and not sucking up fuel. I took the main fuel line off to find it wasn’t pumping anything..it was dry. Just to clarify, I AM hearing the electric fuel pump not only prime but run when I try to crank it over. I’m thinking I might have sucked up some contaminents in the tank by running the electric fuel pump. Any thoughts?

I had my 1998 Caravan (same type of car, different year) fuel pump replaced, the fuel pick up sock broke off of the old one quite easily. Would check to make sure you have fuel pressure at the pump, if not take it out / apart and inspect it.

hi just wondering the plug of your pump only plugs in one way?
          you did’nt join the wires?
reason i ask is that some times people connect wires wrong way
making pump run the other way not all pumps are same .
some will work but make terrible noise

The #1 reason fuel pumps fail is due to heat. The heat builds up when the pump is no longer submerged in the fuel. So if you run your tank low a lot, it can damage the pump. However, you state that it does run. This leads me to believe that there could be a mechanical issue. In order to make that determination, you’re likely going to have to drop the tank and have a look.
