A 2006 Subaru Impreza STI was towed in for a fuel pump. I take off the trunk lining and find that it is covered in Dynamat. Common sense is not too common. Too bad, it costed him to have me sit there with a heat gun and a scraper trying to get this crap off.

I’m glad it cost him. I’m a big fan of making modders pay extra for not making the effort we are forced to make (frequently for free) to undo things to perform flat-rate repairs .

I work at a performance shop but I do all kinds of work and a vast amount of cars. I’ve seen so many mods and many for the better but jeez don’t cover the fuel pump or any other parts that might need to be removed or accessed. I love seeing the customers face when we tell him it’s going to cost extra cause of a mod they did

Did he also have a big speaker box and amp in the way? I charge extra if I have to dig through that. Ditto if it is a trunk filled with clothes and trash. Rate really goes up when I see a car loaded with a bunch of fast food bags and an ashtray that never gets emptied. A good friend of mine is like that. A complete pig in his car. I tell him he better have it cleaned out when I go to work on it or I will forget we are friends when it is time to tally up the bill.

That Dynamat is a pretty penny to get ahold of. His lesson cost him for sure. I hate when guys throw oiled filters and cold air kits on a car then give me a hassle when I explain to them that the oil on it is coating the MAF and causing it to run badly. Or when someone with a sawzall and a Hazard Freight toolset gets some exhaust clamps and an Autozone fart can muffler “because it sounds badass” and then asks me to mop up the aftermath. “Can you just weld it on for me?” No, but if you go get the perfectly good muffler you cut off and a new pipe I will gladly weld that in for you.

“What do you mean my aftermarket tuner is causing all these codes to come up? You’re just mad my car is faster than yours!”
No, I’m not. You could time my Bronco with a calendar and I’m ok with that.

“Those alignment shops don’t know what they’re doing. They keep telling me they can’t align my car but I’m chewing these tires off fast and 20’s are expensive”
This is when it sits lowered down and aftermarket everything that will never have the proper steering geometry or adjustment angles to get it set to proper alignment specs. But all the alignment techs are either stupid or haters.

“I paid a lot of money for that alarm and remote start! What do you mean its the reason my car won’t start!”
On a 15 year old POS where the most generic e-bay made in china system has been scotchlocked in and the factory wiring for damn near anything is headed to a very bad place.

“I didn’t need a wiring adapter for my super cool stereo I bought at Wal-Mart. My buddy came over and just spliced into the wires. He’s done this tons of times.”
No, he did it to three cars and all of them are pretty well fucked. Now you are having issues with your inside lights, dash and everything else and are mad at me because I do not want to touch it.

“I saw that video on YouTube where a guy got 50mpg on his F150 with a hydrogen kit so I bought it and I want you to put it in for me.”
The only person stupider than the guy on YouTube is you, who paid him money and believed that line of horse shit. If those things worked the first people who would hop on that bandwagon would be the automakers. A cheap way to make CAFE standards through 2030 without any special headaches and be able to advertise great mileage would be like engineering alchemy for them. I did have a friend who drank the koolaid on that and bought a kit. Came with uninsulated butt connectors, scotchlocks and some other random BS in the “professional installation hardware.” I tried to talk him out of it, but his Dodge with a V10 is supposed to get 30mpg with it supposedly. So I reluctantly installed it, all the while telling him not only will it not work but he will get engine codes from it. Charged accordingly. He was back after 2 months to have it unhooked and I charged him for that too, and added a big fat I told you so for free.

I am a fan of well thought out, quality engineered mods that improve a vehicle. One could consider the Fel-Pro Problem Solver gasket kit for GM 3.4 engines to be a mod, as it is a deviation from factory engineering designed to improve the vehicle. It performs great. But too much of this is not only poorly made, it is put on by clueless people who blindly believe what a sales brochure claims and can greatly harm the car. To top it off, they see some guy mod the hell out of his car and make it fast, so they do it to their daily driver. They can’t seem to get it that you need a reliable car to get to work, and you leave that thing stock and working smooth so you still have a job. Want to mod up and beat the hell out of a car, get one that is your project. When someone rices the crap out of some jap car and then melts down their head gasket because they drag raced it on Saturday, I am not inclined to excuse their absence on Monday because they had nothing to drive to work. I’d love to make my Bronco a lifted up truck with a firebreathing engine but unless I have something else as a daily driver the closest it is getting to modded is the MSD coil I put on it when the old stock one puked on me. At 25 years old, I never plugged in the block heater and it fired right up at -20F temps last winter without fail. Not bad for a quarter century old truck.
