Hello guys,….. Just came back from the Honda dealer where I was getting an inspection done on my 2008 CR-V. The dealer recommended a fuel injector service at the tune of a few hundred dollars. I politely declined but am curious if this is something that can be done by the DIY’er. My Honda has 81,000 miles currently. Thanks

This is exactly what I remember doing years ago with an older car that I had. The can of cleaner was purchased at an auto parts store. It came pressurized with a clear tube attached to it. The end screwed onto the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Then you pulled the fuse for the fuel pump, and started the car and ran it off of the can of cleaner. You knew you were done when the engine stalled. Pop the fuse back in and you’re in business. Can this still be done nowadays?

A DIY can do it if they have the correct equipment and the knowledge to do it correctly and most of all safely. The dealer is equipped to handle the job on all counts. That’s why they charge as much as they do.

You likely don’t need it. That’s an upsell designed to pay for the expensive machine they bought to perform that service. I rarely if ever perform that service on Hondas and have never had an issue. Also, anytime I have done that, I really haven’t noticed any significant improvement in anything. I’m not saying those services don’t have their place but I rarely see any type of result from it. That’s just my opinion.

That’s what I thought. What about adding the liquid stuff to your gas tank? Any thoughts? I seem to think those are just gimmicks as well.

I recommend and use myself, an in tank injector cleaner twice a year. I figure that it can’t hurt and it helps to maintain injector cleanliness but don’t expect it to clean partially plugged injectors.

I have had good luck with Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank. Also helps your fuel pump too.
