Problem

Recently noticed gas gauge stuck or unstable. Never had a problem before. How should I attack this problem?

Background

1999 Ford Contour SVT 180000
No Codes
Runs Fine
No leaks

Recent repair to car in past 6 months that may help you help me.

Replaced clutch 1st clutch at 175000( big job but everything works fine), idler pulley, tensioner pulley, belt, ac/clutch

Fuel pump changed a few years ago.

Throttle body was never cleaned and was filthy and resolved emissions problem.

All other required maintainance is regularly performed per manual.

Sounds like the fuel sender is failing. If it was replaced with the fuel pump it may have been an inferior quality. If it was not replaced with the fuel pump, then it has most likely just worn out. I always recommend replacing the fuel pump and sender as an assembly, using OEM parts if possible.

Thanks and it has never changed only the fuel pump. I will check it out and tell you how it goes. Take Care.

I have a 1999 Olds Alero that does typically the same thing. The gauge will go from full down to 1/2, to full then the correct amount, then to empty etc. Actually fluctuating is the issue. I suspected a ground the sending unit ? And also the battery went dead because it sat for a few months over the winter in my garage and the needle has spun around to the opposite side of the full peg when the battery went dead. Yeah, figure that one. Never seen something like that before. That may be another symptom to whats going on with it. How to get that back over is inscrutable. lol. No reply to what was up to this issue posted yet. I also read that this was a common problem with these vehicles. Thanks for any advise.
