Hello everyone! I have an 08 Avalon with a front rotor warping problem. I know that this a common problem with all avalons and I want to try using ebc slotted and dimpled rotors. I figure they are super high quality steel and maybe the slotting and dimples will reduce heat build up enough along with quality ceramic pads to stop the warping or at least lessen it greatly….. What are your thoughts?

Ps- I want to use dimpled vs full drilled rotors because of the lessened risk for cracking.

Thank you all for your feed back!,
      Sean.

Unless I’m completely out to lunch, I thought that things like slotting, drilling and dimpling were intended to improve braking performance in wet conditions, not for improved heat shedding.

A drilled and slotted rotor will help dissipate heat and expel brake dust created from braking.

A couple of other items to consider before spending the extra coin on the EBC rotors:

          1. Were the lug nut torqued to the OEM specification? Over torqueing will cause the rotors to warp over time.

          2. Is the warped rotor only on one side? It is possible the caliper is dragging due to corrosion on the guide pins causing the rotors to over heat and warp.

How does the steering wheel feel when accelerating from a stop? Does it feel similar to when the brakes are applied with the left right pulsing?

I was on the fence myself when the rotors on my 2013 Camaro needed replacing; I opted for the EBC stock replacement rotors and Red pads since it is a daily driver and not driven on the track. They provide great braking and I know the rotors are made in the UK and not China.

Rotors do not warp. They wear unevenly (technically known as Disc Thickness Variation) and if the causes are not addressed then whatever rotor and pads you use you will have the same issue return.

Google up some info on the subject of Disc Thickness Variation(DTV) or read these and many others. It is a common problem on many vehicles.
            http://www.bendix.com.au/news/disc-thickness-variation-dtv-issue-14

To avoid the recurrence of DTV your hubs need to be sound and the rotors and calipers set up correctly when often they are not. Many of the brake guys do not even bother checking for rotor run out. They just throw on a new rotor to a rusty hub so it will never sit true and re-assemble the brake system.. Then to finish off their sloppy work they over tighten the wheel nuts with their rattle guns.

Get a high quality set of slotted front rotors and new pads and ensure these are properly installed and set up correctly and you will be fine.

My thoughts here are to try and correct the issue causing it. Are you seeing uneven brake wear? If so, possibly slide pins causing the issue or maybe needing a touch up of grease on them (of course, if applicable, check the boots if any tears). Also, is one side of the brakes wearing out more so than the other? May have a stuck caliper. I feel that replacing the rotors, you will only have the same issue no matter the rotors.

              Best regards,
              Ryan

Make sure the calipers are properly serviced first. Here’s a video on that.

If everything is moving correctly and not hanging up and you’re still having the problem, then I would recommend trying the slotted rotors. Just be sure everything is working as it should first. More info here.
