Vehicle is 2012 Highlander Hybrid AWD. 88 000 miles. Problem appeared about 6-7 months back.
Symptoms are as follows:
1. drives fine from the start. No shakes, vibrations, etc.
2. after well warmed up, if it is rolling at speeds between 20-40mph, driver side (what it feels like) starts shaking up down. It is worse with higher speed, can be simple slow up-down at lower
3. even gentle acceleration or braking immediately stops that shake
4. here’s the kicker. Tossing gear shifter into neutral also stops shake.
5. basically, torque applied to wheels, either motive torque or braking torque, stops shake. OR, complete torque removal in neutral.
6. I had it up on the lift and noticed some out of round in tires. Visible. Replaced tires. it helped, but not completely.
7. It’s a hybrid, so it drops into electric mode exactly in that speed range. That means ICE shuts down and, rolling, motor generator acts as generator charging battery. Normally, there is a slight jerk when ICE shuts down or turns on. I had Camry hybrid and she had none of that vibration rolling. So, unless ICE turns on/off continuously during rolling, which it should not be doing, it’s irrelevant to the shake.
8. I do all maintenance myself on lift, so I have good access to underbody. Nothing is out of normal, nothing torn, damaged, leaking. Tugged on driver side half axle, it seems to be solid. It’s a long one, with pressed on carrier bearing. So it’s LONG half shaft.
9. I can’t even do bounce test for struts, car sits so solid on them. My 230 lb won’t even move it.
10. No noises, nothing. No goof lights.
That shake is killing me. Suspension is basically same as regular Highlander. Nothing special. Just that poer train behaves differently.
Any ideas?
