Are the backing plates supposed to make contact with the brake pad brackets or is there usually a little space between the two where they meet?

Noticed mine is binding and wedged tight on the bracket where the two pieces meet

Usually the backing plate has a slight cut out for the caliper bracket and mounts
to the knuckle. I’m gonna say it should not touch the backing plate.

Yes I’m referring to the top edge where it’s cut for the caliper bracket and mount. It touches and is wedged into it. Should it be free of that ever so slightly?

It should not touch. bend it until it does not touch.

Technically, it’s not a backing plate, it’s a splash shield. It’s only referred to as a backing plate with drum brakes. Just an FYI.

That said, as long as it’s not touching and making noise, it should be fine. It’s common for it to get bent during a brake job causing noise. You can just bend it out of the way if that happens.

              I cover this issue here.
