Sometime, somewhere I was told that on some vehicles it is possible to screw up and drop the ring gear into the case while replacing front wheel drive axles. Is this correct? If so, in general, what vehicles?

never heard of that myself, when replacing CV axles its usually a pretty straight forward procedure.

I’ve seen many (not all) transaxles apart. I enjoy watching videos of transmission rebuilds on youtube. The design for the differential is always the same, the ring gear is bolted to the differential carrier or housing and the housing turns on large tapered roller bearings inside the case. Usually, when the case is split, as part of the process of getting to the transaxle internals, the differential housing can then be lifted out.

I drive an AWD sedan and it has two differentials in front. It has a shaft the goes from one differential through the center of a second differential to drive the left front wheel. Last fall I pulled that shaft and still nothing fell or dropped out of place.
