I recently purchased a 1953 GMC truck with a newer 350sb Chevy crate engine installed. It runs great but I asked the previous owner about his oil changing routine and he said Chevy recommended oil changes every 5000 miles. The engine currently has 8000 miles on it. I am using 5w-30 oil as he said that is what Chevy recommended. I seem to recall hearing that oil should be changed more frequently with a new engine. Can I get your thoughts?

      Thanks

I would agree with the 5,000 miles. Traditionalists say 3,000 but many think that is not necessary with today’s engines. Many, if not most GM cars recommend 5w-30. If you’re driving that beautiful 53 truck super hard, 3,000 oil change won’t hurt it but 5,000 mile changes should be sufficient in my opinion. Congrats on the truck!!

Oil is cheap. I change it every 2-3000 miles. Keeps everything nice and clean inside. If the engine in your truck has 8k miles already, just keep up with regular oil changes.
