#FairmontProject. Yep, they’ve finally begun. From here out out, you’ll see plenty of Fairmont. This series will help determine the future of ETCG. Hope you enjoy it.

          Hey Eric,

I just had a thought. Regular Car Reviews just finished his V8-swapped 1961 Falcon, called the Vagabond Falcon. You and him should plan a track day with the Fairmont and the Vagabond Falcon together. Yes, I know the Fairmont is much faster, but the meet up would be glorious. He could also review your Fairmont 🙂

Great work and explanation on this project. Is it common for cars to have a mixture of metic and Imperial fasteners? I noticed you used some of both here.

With domestic vehicles of this vintage, yes.

I started out as a Chevy guy and morphed to what ever is priced so I can fix it, drive a year or so and still make a bit of a profit .
The only thing that always held true was if you want it to last forever use a Ford 9 inch. Why are we using a modern (make as cheap as we can) diff?
                  Just wondering.

Hey Eric, great video! I want to do the gears in the El Camino sometime this summer, and this guide will be a great help! 8.8’s are pretty darn tough. The 8.8’s are only .2 inches smaller than the tried and true 9 inch.

They only put 9″‘s in a limited amount of Fox bodies. That makes them hard to find for my application. I realize I can modify one to work, but that would have been more work than I had time for. It’s much easier to find an 8.8. The 9″ is a great rear end no doubt, but it’s not the only one out there.

There’s 2 reasons people go for the 9″. Ease of set up, and the 3rd pinion bearing. Those things make it a very desirable rear end. The 8.8 is a perfectly viable alternative however.

Good luck with the El Camino.

If Ford ever did something right it was the 8.8. Well, anyways, they are good at differentials. Good video. Working at a dealer, or most shops, nobody does rear end rebuilds anymore.

You’re right, it’s rare that you find people that do differential work.

I have done a couple this month, one was just replacing the leaking seals though. I used the ball of a ball peen hammer hit by another hammer to drive the pinion gear out. One was a 72 olds and the other a older Chevelle. I noticed both axles had to be rewelded . Must of been from the excessive torque. Great video by the way. Probably wont see many builds, mostly wore out trucks and leaking seals.

No I don’t, but if you check the description of the first video in this series I believe I put a like to Ford differential ID’s.
