Please advise. A flashing red car-light with a key inside shows up only when car is switched off. What does this mean and how to reset. My car is a Subaru Legacy , 2.5 Automatic GT and keyless entry.
      Thanks
      Glenn

            Programming remote

            1. Close all doors, trunk, gate
            2. Open the driver’s door, sit in the driver’s seat, and close the door.
            3. Perform the following steps within 45 seconds.
            (1) Open and close the driver’s door once.
            (2) Insert the key into the ignition switch, then turn it from the “LOCK” position to the “ON” position 10 times within 15 seconds.
NOTE: When you complete step (2), an electronic tone will sound once. If you do not perform steps (1) and (2) within 45 seconds, an error will occur. An electronic tone will not sound. In this event, perform the whole procedure again beginning with part 1.
            4. Open and close the door once within 15 seconds.
When part 4 of the procedure is completed, an electronic tone will sound for 30 seconds. If you do not perform the operations in part 4 within 15 seconds, an error
will occur and the electronic tone will not sound. In this event, perform the registration steps again beginning with part 3 of the procedure.
            5. Before the electronic tone stops sounding, press the lock side of the power door lock switch the same number of times as the leftmost digit of the transmitter
code. For example, press the lock switch eight times if the leftmost digit of the code is 8.
NOTE . The electronic tone will stop sounding when you start entering the number. If you do not start entering the number using the lock switch before the electronic tone stops sounding, an error will occur. In this event, perform the registration steps again beginning with part 3 of the procedure.
If the interval between one press of the switch and the next exceeds 5 seconds, an error will occur. In this event, perform the procedure again beginning with part 4. If an error occurs six times, perform the procedure again starting with part 3.
            6. When you have finished entering the number, press the unlock side of the lock switch within 5 seconds.
NOTE . An electronic tone will sound. If you press the unlock side of the lock switch when more than 5 seconds have passed, an error will occur. In this
event, perform the procedure again beginning with part 4. If an error occurs six times, perform the procedure again starting with part 3.
            7. Perform parts 5 and 6 of the procedure for each of the remaining digits of the transmitter code beginning with the second digit (counting from the left) and
            finishing with the eighth digit.
NOTE When you finish entering the eighth digit, an electronic tone will sound for 30 seconds. If the interval between one press of the switch and the next exceeds 5
seconds, an error will occur. In this event, perform the procedure again beginning with part 4. If an error occurs six times, perform the procedure again starting with part 3.
            8. Before the electronic tone stops sounding, use the power door lock switch to reenter the transmitter code beginning with the leftmost digit.
If you do not start entering the number using the lock switch before the electronic tone stops sounding, an error will occur. In this event, perform the procedure again beginning with part 3.
            9. When you have finished entering the code a second time, an electronic tone will sound for 1 second to indicate completion of registration, provided the code entered the second time is identical to that entered the first time.
NOTE If the code entered the second time is not identical to the code entered the first time, an error will occur. In this event, perform the procedure again
beginning with part 5. If an error occurs five times, perform the procedure again starting with part 3.
            10. If you wish to program another transmitter code into the system (up to 4 transmitter codes can be programmed into the system), perform the procedure beginning with part 4. When you have finished programming all of the necessary transmitter codes into the system, remove the key from the ignition switch.
            11. Test every registered transmitter to confirm correct operation.

Alarm- Activating and Deactivating the alarm, Valet mode
(your dealer can do this for you)
To change the setting of your vehicle’s alarm system for activation or deactivation, do the following.
            1. To Disarm the alarm, set Valet mode
            2. Sit in the driver’s seat and shut all doors, gate, trunk
            3. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
            4. Hold down the REAR (UNLOCK) side of the driver’s power door locking switch and open the driver’s door within the following 1 second, and wait 10 seconds without releasing the switch.
The setting will then be changed.
If the system was previously activated the trip meter screen displays “AL oF” and the horn sounds twice, indicating that the system is now deactivated.
If the system was previously deactivated the trip meter screen displays “AL on” and the horn sounds once, indicating that the system is now activated.

Hey Nightflyr. Just a quick note, this Legacy does not have a key slot. To start the car you need to depress the brake pedel until a green-light appears on the push- to – start button to allow start. This button is then depressed and the car starts. To stop , you just push the same button.

Only going through your note over and over. I was ready to go into action and here is where I realized that there is no key slot for this car. Probably this flashing light is to indicate that the alarm system is intact. This is my guest. So a million thanks and if I need be I will always give you a shout.
                  Thanks Bro.

Also here’s a copy of your owners manual-for free, from Subaru:
                    http://www.planetsubaru.com/subaru-owners-manual.htm

Finally every push button start equipped car ALSO has a “midget” key inside the fob, it just takes some figuring out how to remove and finally there is usually a slot just under the push button start that the entire fob can go into and simulate inserting, turning, and removing a key. Personally I think it’s a coolish feature to have but when I worked at a service shop it was also a pain in the rear for folks who would literally forget to leave us the remote-we couldn’t pull the car in and do the work. Most places will now ASK (repeatedly if necessary) when the customer tells them “Oh I don’t need a key to start it” for the remote fob OR for the customer to hand it to the counter person who will then remove the midget key and then instruct the customer to put the fob itself in the slot in the vehicle.

Seems like you’re in good hands here. Please continue to keep us updated. My 2c, sounds like normal operation. I could be wrong though as Im not familiar with that specific system.

Nightflyr. I got from jonsey the complete manual for the Legacy and as regards the flashing red light it says that is to indicate the alarm system is armed. So I guess that all is well.
