Hi guys, when investigating my suspect wheel bearing fault last week I noticed what looked like a fuel line hanging down abnormally. On closer inspection I found the charcoal canister had lost one of its hose tails. The hose was still hanging onto the plastic tail. I remembered seeing a video on youtube some time ago about a product that can be used to properly fix plastic parts back together and went looking for it. In the mean time I super glued the tail back on as I had a funeral to go to the following day.
I ordered a pack of Q Bond from ebay for £8 delivered, at the cost of a replacement charocal canister I thought it was well worth a try.
I took the canister off, deliberately broke off my super glue repair and cleaned it up using brake cleaner and a needle file to remove any grime and super glue from the previous “get me out of trouble” repair. I made a gentle V on each section like you would if you were welding two sheets of metal together.
I then started using the Q Bond like I saw on the video, a little glue, then powder, glue powder, more glue until I built up a little weld that I could file back. Here is a picture of the finished repair which I am glad to say stood the “can I reasonably snap this off” test and a weeks worth of driving. I am proud to say that she looks like she is going to last.
Although not the prettiest of repairs I think it was well worth the £8 and ten minutes cleaning and sticking it back together especially when it is hidden up near the fuel tank.
If you find yourself in a similar situation with a plastic part broken I would definitely suggest giving this a go before reaching for your wallet to buy a replacement part. The product claims it can repair metal items too. I’m not so sure I would be confident in using it in replacement of welding, but for plastics it saved my bacon and my wallet.
I hope this helps someone who finds a plastic repair problem in the future.
Matt
