I like the concept. You should and could have a major sponsor to supply parts.

Here is one approach to get a sponsor. There are four or five large companies that want more exposure and to sell more parts to the DIY auto repair people and a third party like you can provide that exposure, great credibility, and sell more parts. Your concept EricTheCar Guy delivers. (The name “fixing it forward” is too confusing but the underlying concept of fixing it forward is a big winner)

For DIYers EricTheCar guy takes the mystery out of auto repair and maintenance and SELLS parts. Here are the companies – MOPAR, Autozone, Pepboys, Advance Autoparts, Napaonline, Oreillyauto, Carquest, Autopartswarehouse, Rockauto.

Put together a simple business proposal on what you plan to deliver – viewers, subscribers, minutes of video, how many viewers watch more than 80 percent of each video, parts replaced, sponsor billboards, sponsor scripts, product placement, the growth trajectory of Eric The Car Guy, etc and then ask for their participation in terms of parts only – probably delivered through your local store for simplicity. Contact the head of marketing for the big three first – based on what I have read, Mopar seems to want this exposure bad but that would limit your target fixes. Pitch the concept and with your current track record I am sure one will accept your offer. Give each company you pitch the list of companies you are making this pitch to and that the first company that agrees will have category exclusivity for a period of time.

Once you prove success for the sponsor on the first agreement and that time period has passed, the next agreement will add a fee for your celebrity in addition to free parts.

With this sponsorship you can still deliver your underlying concept of fixing it forward and it will launch Eric The Car Guy into another, higher, orbit. This is a winner.

I think you’re right. However I am going to try just sticking bearings in as you suggested just to try and get it back on the road for a little while. It was only just starting to click. 4 and 6 just had tiny amounts of side to side movement. It was enough to be audible however, but they aren’t fully spun. Maybe I can get away with that for a while. Besides the bearings were cheap. Also got some ARP rod bolts to eliminate those stupid one time use rod bolts that VW charges 23 dollars a piece for. Here’s the dilemma though, I called around yesterday and it seems that a running lower mileage VR6 is gonna be extremely hard to find. Even a VW specialty shop local to me only had one in stock and it was the 24 valve which my ecu won’t run. I have the 12 valve. And it’s because the AFP code engine was only produced from 1999.5 to 2002. I can find the AAA code which is identical EXCEPT that there is no provision for the driver’s side engine mount. They used a front lower mount instead on that one for most of its production run but a very few 1998-early 99 had the mount boss drilled and tapped. Maybe while I have it running again, IF this holds up for me, which I’m going to polish the whiz out of the crank journals, and with those ARP bolts it should work for a while at least, one will turn up.

Thank you for your kind words.

Money has never been my focus other than being able to take care of my family. I’ve been able to do that for some time now. So my focus has shifted to philanthropic efforts. That’s why I do the work I do, not for the money. I have all the money I need and a great job.

Perhaps one day I’ll make it your way, or you may make it to one of the ‘Meet Up’s’. Either way, I’d be happy to shake your hand.

I just read your newsletter and saw that you are thinking of making some changes to fixing it forward. I give you a lot of credit and praise for everything you are doing on this program.

I hope you don’t mind if people chime in with ideas, but I wanted to share how a friends church does a similar program. They actually buy decent cars that people they know are ready to trade in. Some of the church members donate their old cars. One of their congregation who is a mechanic makes the necessary repairs using donated parts, then they give the car to the person who needs it. When they pick a car to fix they look it over like someone would do when they are going to flip a car to make sure the car don’t need too much work. My ’93 Corolla went through this program about 10 years ago, and my friend “who is the church mechanic” told me that my old car is still on the road being driven by a single mom.

                Enjoy your trip to Europe!!!!

                Chris

Thank you for the suggestion. That’s something I’d actually considered. I don’t know if it would work in every situation, but it’s something worth looking into.

                  Thanks again for the suggestion.
