My 1996 Honda Accord LX has a soft brake pedal that needs pushed very far to stop the car. I thought the problem was the master cylinder, which I changed, however pedal feel only improved slightly. I had purchased new drums and shoes a few years ago that I never put on the car, so I put them on. Before the installation, when I turned the drum, it would spin freely with no drag, except at certain points it would catch and I would need to turn drum firmly to get it past the point. I thought that the drums or shoes were out of balance and that the new hardware would fix the problem. After installation of the new drums and shoes however, the drum still catches at certain points while spinning freely with no drag everywhere else.
The old shoes, both of which are the same size, are worn unevenly. On the left shoe, the top is worn down about halfway, and the bottom isn’t hardly worn at all. The right shoe is the opposite, the top is hardly worn at all, and the left is worn about halfway down. The right shoe is generally more worn on the left. The left brakes have the same wear pattern with the right and left shoes reversed. I have attached images of the right and left brake shoes.
