Five speed manual clashing when trying to shift.

I have an Isuzu manual five speed transmission on a ’95 Cavalier with 202,000 plus miles on it.

It shifts fine in all gears BUT second.

It clashes – it grinds. Even when the clutch pedal is pushed in, it grinds a little sometimes but ONLY in second.

I think it’s the first/second gear synchronizer that’s shot – although, it shifts fine into first.

Any thoughts?

had similar problem on my 02 honda accord v6, but on reverse, it would grind and not engage, it was infact a synchro, it was worn out but sometimes was able to engage.

Had similar issue with 03 Element and 13 Jetta. The syncro for second gets used the most so it tends to go out first. Parts are not to bad but usually sold as a matched set with new gears. the hassle is pulling the box, disassembly and shimming for the right clearance with the new syncro pack. Might as well toss in a new clutch set while you have the gear box out.

The funny thing is a I put a new clutch in 14,000 miles ago. It took 186,000 miles to wear that out.

I’m having trouble finding parts for my transmission.

I don’t like the idea of dropping the tranny again, but it looks like it’d be an interesting even fun project.

Then no need to change your cluch pack again, just check their condition while u have the transmission open just in case they got damaged but i doubt it.
