I am in the final stages of rebuilding my GS-R/B16a in my 98 civic. I have the pistons in with new rings, oil pan back on, adjusting the valves(just ordered “Jam Nut Valve Adjustment Tool”, I am just nervous about starting the engine for the first time.Thier are so many video’s out but none really cover what to do on a rebuild.
    My big questions are:
how do i set the cams with the crank to not damage the valves upon intial startup
Should #1 be @ TDC before i turn the key, does it matter(im assuming it does)

If you put the timing belt on with all the marks lined up correct, you will not hit the valves. Turn the engine by hand to make sure nothing binds. Also, I would turn the motor over with the starter, with out starting it for a few times. Get all the oil moving through the engine first.

From what I’ve seen you should keep turning it over until the oil gets into the head (valve cover area) and then allow the engine to start running.

Then run the engine in all the rpm ranges afterwards.
